Aromatic Use of Essential Oils
2
Why should I use essential oils aromatically?
Why should I use essential oils aromatically? -Produce relaxing, calming, or uplifting feelings -Purify the air -Manage mood While there are many ways to enjoy essential oils, aromatic use, or the use of essential oils through the air, continues to be one of the most popular methods because it is both easy and effective. Aromatic use allows the user to enjoy the benefits of essential oils by diffusing or dispersing an essential oil through the air and breathing it in. If you are wondering how you might benefit from using essential oils aromatically, let’s briefly go over the advantages of aromatic use. One of the greatest benefits of using oils aromatically is that you can create a relaxing, calming, uplifting, or invigorating environment with the potent power of essential oils. In addition to promoting a calming or uplifting atmosphere, diffusing certain essential oils can also help to purify the air in the room. This is helpful for keeping your home feeling fresh and clean, and allowing your family to breathe in purified air. Lastly, essential oils are very useful for balancing your mood, and using them aromatically is one of the quickest ways to help you perk up, unwind, get motivated, calm down, or manage your mood in any other way. We will discuss each of these benefits in more detail, but as you can see, there are many benefits of aromatic use, and plenty of reasons why you would want to use essential oils aromatically.
3
Historical cases of aromatic use
For those of you who are new to essential oils, it is important to point out that aromatic use isn’t a new fad or trend, but a practice that has been around for centuries. Aromatherapy (the use of essential oils and plant extracts) has been popular since ancient times, as people in civilizations like ancient Rome, Greece, India, and China often used essential oils for their aromatic benefits. While aromatherapy was popular for things like religious ceremonies or rituals, these ancient people also used essential oils aromatically to alter and uplift their mood and atmosphere—something that essential oils are still useful for today.

Benefit: producing calming, relaxing, or uplifting feelings
*Consider giving the audience their own Oil Properties Wheel printout, since you will be using it throughout the presentation (see slide 11). Whether you want to create a relaxing environment in the home, an energizing feeling in your office, or promote a specific atmosphere in any room, aromatic use of essential oils provides a simple way to achieve your desired effect. You might be wondering, “How exactly can an essential oil promote calming, relaxing, or uplifting feelings?” The simple answer to that question is that each essential oil has a different chemical makeup that gives the oil its specific benefit. For example, some essential oils contain chemical properties that are known to promote relaxing feelings, while other oils have chemical structures that make them invigorating or uplifting. If we take a look at the essential oil properties wheel on this slide, we can see how different oils possess certain natural chemical components, and those components can contribute to calming, renewing, warming, soothing, uplifting, energizing, harmonizing, or grounding feelings. Go over the oil properties wheel with the audience and show how each oil has chemical properties that determine what kind of benefits it has to offer. You can also point out that these “chemical components” occur naturally in the plant, and are natural chemicals within the oil, not added in during production. Give the audience examples of specific oils that you use to promote certain feelings. For example, you could say something like, “I love to use Lavender oil for relaxation because it has chemical components that can promote calming feelings,” or, “I often diffuse Peppermint oil when I am feeling sluggish to help me get energized for the day.”

Benefit: purifying the air
Arborvitae Eucalyptus Juniper Berry Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Thyme Wild Orange Just as some essential oils have chemical components that make them calming or uplifting, other essential oils hold cleansing and purifying properties that make them useful for purifying the air. You can use essential oils with purifying characteristics to get rid of unpleasant odors, promote a pleasant aroma in the home, and purify the air in any room. So many of the air-purifying agents on the market today have toxins and harsh chemicals, but using essential oils to purify the air in your home provides a safe, natural way to cleanse the air. Essential oils like Arborvitae, Eucalyptus, Juniper Berry, Melaleuca, Thyme, and Wild Orange have cleansing properties, and can be diffused to help purify the air in your home. Give the audience examples of any essential oils that you use for purifying the air. For example, you could say something like, “I always diffuse Wild Orange in my kitchen to purify the unpleasant smells that come from the garbage or dirty dishes in the sink.”

Benefit: managing your mood
Bergamot – can help reduce feelings of negativity and stress Cypress – has a grounding effect on emotions Eucalyptus – promotes an uplifted mood Lavender – helps reduce anxious feelings Lemon – promotes an uplifted, energized mood Patchouli – can be used to balance emotions Tangerine – promotes feelings of happiness Ylang Ylang – helps to uplift mood while promoting calmness While essential oils can be used aromatically to promote a calming or uplifting atmosphere, and purify the air, aromatic use has traditionally been used to help influence mood. Like we talked about earlier, each essential oil has a unique chemical makeup and aroma. When you use an essential oil aromatically, you will inhale the aroma, which then interacts with chemical sensors in the brain, and elicits a reaction. This is why essential oils can be used to manage emotions. Discuss the oils listed on the slide and their benefits for managing mood. Share with the audience any specific essential oils that you like to use to manage your mood. Mention any essential oils you use regularly that are uplifting, calming, relaxing, invigorating, energizing, etc. Give the audience any tips for using essential oils to manage mood. If time permits, you can also talk about the dōTERRA Emotional Aromatherapy® system and how to use it to manage emotions.

Essential oil diffusers
-Aroma Lite diffuser -Aroma Ace diffuser -Lotus diffuser -Petal diffuser When you want to use essential oils aromatically, using an essential oil diffuser is one of the most effective ways to enjoy the aromatic benefits of specific oils. Essential oil diffusers take an oil and transform it into a fine mist that disperses the oil and its aroma through the air. By using a diffuser, you can enjoy the scent of an essential oil for an extended period of time in a simple and convenient way. dōTERRA offers several different diffuser models, each of which provide different features and benefits depending on your preferences. The Aroma Lite diffuser is very compact and has multiple settings, allowing you to achieve the perfect amount of diffusion for your needs. With a high mist output, this diffuser can cover up to 500 square feet. Because of its size and lighting features, the Aroma Lite diffuser is perfect for traveling and on-the-go. The Aroma Ace diffuser is a waterless diffuser that diffuses straight oil, and can cover 600 to 800 square feet. This diffuser is useful when you want to distribute a strong aroma across a large area. The Lotus diffuser has a chic vertical design that takes up very little space and looks good in any room. Perfect for the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, or other living spaces, the Lotus diffuser can cover up to 330 square feet and has a medium mist output that can run for 1-3 hours. The Petal diffuser is not only dōTERRA’s most affordable diffuser, but its simple design makes it the perfect diffuser for those who are new to essential oils. This diffuser covers up to 330 square feet, has a high mist output, and can run for up to four hours at a time. After discussing the benefits of each dōTERRA diffuser, tell the audience about any dōTERRA diffusers you have tried, and why you like them. For example, you might say something like, “My favorite dōTERRA diffuser is the Lotus diffuser because it looks great no matter where I put it, and doesn’t take up too much room,” or “If you are first starting out with essential oils, I would recommend the Petal diffuser because it is easy to use and very effective.”

Essential oil diffuser usage and maintenance tips
-Avoid placing the diffuser in direct sunlight -Unplug before cleaning -Clean the diffuser regularly according to the manufacturer’s directions -Use natural cleaning agents (water, vinegar) Depending on the type of diffuser you have and its features, you can place a diffuser practically anywhere to enjoy the benefits of essential oils. A few common places to put a diffuser include the bedroom, living room, kitchen, common areas, spa rooms, hotel rooms, offices, and more. No matter where you place the diffuser, it is best to avoid placing it in the sunlight, or next to a fan. When it comes to caring for your diffuser, be sure to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The key to maintaining a working diffuser is to clean it often. Be sure to clean the diffuser regularly, including a deep cleaning at least once a month. When cleaning, you’ll want to first unplug the diffuser, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and use natural cleaning agents like water and vinegar.

Safety When it comes to using an essential oil diffuser, you might be wondering, “How much oil should I use?” or, “How long should I run the diffuser for?” While most other essential oil application methods include specific dosage recommendations, there are several factors that will determine the appropriate amount of time and oil when diffusing. It can be difficult to control the amount of oil that you are exposed to during aromatic use, because exposure depends on the size of the room, the quality of the air in the room, the output power of the diffuser, etc. In addition to these factors, each person in the room will react a little bit differently to the aroma of an essential oil. Because all of these factors make essential oil exposure difficult to control, the best course of action during aromatic use is to remember that moderation is best. By moderating the time and amount of oil during diffusion, you can help everyone in the room enjoy the benefits that essential oils have to offer. Remember, if you have any specific health concerns, it is always a good idea to consult your physician before using essential oils in any capacity.

Diffuser blends -Decide what kind of diffuser blend you want (relaxing, invigorating, uplifting, etc) -Choose a group of oils that can achieve your desired effect -Using oils that fit your desired outcome, begin pairing While diffusing a single essential oil in your diffuser is a great way to enjoy the specific benefits that the oil offers, it can also be fun to create your own diffuser blends by mixing two or more oils together and placing them in the diffuser. Let’s talk about the best way to create your own diffuser blend. First, you’ll want to determine what kind of diffuser blend you want. Do you want an invigorating blend? Do you want something that will create a relaxing environment? Once you decide what kind of effect you want to achieve, you will have an easier time choosing your oils. Next, pull out the oils that fit your description. For example, if you want a relaxing diffuser blend, you would choose essential oils that are known to promote a calming environment. Remember the oil properties wheel we talked about a few slides back? You can use this to determine what kind of oils you’ll need to help you achieve your desired outcome. Consider giving the audience their own Oil Properties Wheel printout, since you will be using it throughout the presentation. Once you’ve identified what types of oils will help you to create the kind of blend you want, you can begin pairing. It might take a little experimentation to figure out which oils go well together, but that is part of the fun! To see if a certain combination of oils will go well together, you can simply open the bottles, place them under the nose, and inhale. This will give you an idea of what your diffuser blend will smell like. Consider giving the audience a few ideas for diffuser blends. If you have a favorite diffuser blend, share it with the audience. If you have any tricks for creating a good diffuser blend, be sure to share your personal experiences with the audience. Examples: Apple Pie – Douglas Fir (3 drops), Cinnamon (2 drops), Citrus Bliss (3 drops) Sleepy Snuggles – Juniper Berry (3 drops), Vetiver (2 drops), Bergamot (2 drops) Tahiti – Wild Orange (3 drops), Ginger (1 drop), Ylang Ylang (2 drops)
