1 Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions
Factoring the expression - writing a numerical expression or algebraic expression as a product of factors. You use the Distributive Property to factor expressions. Algebra: ab + ac = a( b + c ) ab – ac = a( b – c )

2 Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions
Example with numbers: 4 ∙ ∙ 5 = 4 ( ) 4 ∙ ∙ 5 = 4 ( )

3 Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions
Example 1 – Factoring a Numerical Expression Factor using the GCF Find the GCF of 20 and (5 + 2)

4 Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions
Example 2 – Identifying Equivalent Expressions Is 15x + 35 equivalent to 5 (3x + 7)? Explain. First factor 15x+35 by finding the GCF of 15x and x (3x + 7) Yes, they are equivalent because it factors to be 5(3x+7)

5 Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions
Example 3 – Factoring an Algebraic Expression You receive a discount on each song you purchase for your MP3 player. The original price of each song is x dollars. You purchase 3 songs for a total of (3x – 6) dollars. Factor the expression. What can you conclude about the discount? (3x – 6) 3(x – 2) You can conclude that your discount is 2 dollars.
