3 Known For… Dennis Chavez was a Democratic politician from the U.S. state of New Mexico who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1931 to 1935, and in the United States Senate from 1935 to He was born April 8 ,1888 in Los Chaves, New Mexico and died November 18,1862.

4 Early Life… Dennis Chavez was third child of eight kids. His birth name is Dionisio, but during his younger days in school they gave him the name “Dennis”! In the eighth grade Chaves dropped out of school and started pushing carts in local food stores to help support his family. Even though he dropped out of school that didn’t mean he didn’t want an education. Chavez spent almost every evening reading books in the library about politics and anything involving his hero Thomas Jefferson. In 1905 he joined Albuquerque Engineering Department. During Jones campaign in 1916 Chavez worked as an interpreter Senate candidate Andreius A. Jones. In 1918 Jones rewarded Chavez with a clerks position in the U.S Senate. During time that Chavez was clerking he entered Georgetown University to study in law. He was admitted after taking a special entrance examination, even though he dropped out of school in the eighth grade. In 1920 he earned a law degree from Georgetown.

5 Dennis Chavez Innovative (global) Impact…
Soon after Chavez returned back to Albuquerque were he established a successful law practice. He became very active in the local politics winning a seat in the New Mexico House of Representatives. Shortly after that he ran for a seat in the U.S House of Representatives and defeated Albert Simms. Still in New Mexico Chavez served as the state only representative, even though it was small. Running again in 1934 he ran against the powerful republican Bronson Cutting. After a long challenging fight between the two Chavez claimed that vote fraud had taking place. Before the issue could be resolved calling was killed in an airplane crash. Defeating a popular Republican Candidate Chavez was officially elected to the position in 1936.

Cutting o Reelected in 1940, 1946, 1952, and again in 1958, and served from May 11, 1935, until his death in Washington, D.C., November 18, 1962
