2 The Republic of Croatia is a Central European country, located between the Danube River in the north and the Adriatic Sea in the south. Croatia consists of: 4 river basin districts Black Sea basin Sava river basin Drava and Danube river basin Adriatic basin Littoral - Istrian basin Dalmatian basin 34 sub–basin districts The territory of Croatia and associated waters are divided into two basins, the Black Sea River Basin in the north and the Adriatic River Basin in the south of the country. Black Sea basin is further divided into two river basins, The Sava river basin and Drava and Danube river basin. The Adriatic River Basin is also divided into two river basins, Istrian basin on the north and Dalmatian basin on the south.

4 POTENTIAL TRANSBOUNDARY AQUIFERS
Under way is the preparation of river basin district management plans, analysis of potential transboundary aquifers, definition of transboundary water bodies and establishment of bilateral cooperation with neighbouring countries for harmonization of data on such aquifers. Croatia has 4 neighbouring countries, at this point we are preparing RB district MP wich includes analyzing potential transboundary aquifers, ofcourse transboundary gwb are defined through copperation with our neigbour countries. 5 INITIAL GROUNDWATER BODY DELINEATION
According to the requirements of the EU WFD (2000/60/EC) - yield of over 0.1 l/s Different approach for karstic and alluvial regions in the Black Sea RB 363 groundwater bodies were identified, In the Adriatic RB, a total of 86 groundwater bodies were identified on the mainland, and 12 on major islands Thesel waterbodies need to be further analyzed for the purpose of aggregation. Preliminary delineation is not yet officially finished and adopted, or considered from the water management viewpoint. 7 As the optimum grouping method for our conditions, the UK model was used in which aquifers are divided into three types: PRIMARY (groundwater significantly used; vital for groundwater ecosystems); SECONDARY (important role in water supply but due to their hydrogeological and hydraulic characterstics can be overexploited) UNPRODUCTIVE MAP OF TRANSBOUNDARY GWB TYPES MAP OF VULNERABILITY OF TRANSBOUNDARY GW BODIES ME MAPS OF AQUIFERS VULNERABILITY are prepared on the basis of lithological aquitard composition, thickenss and favourability for aquifer protection. PRESSUSERS ON GW QUANTITY STATUS Status of GW quantity in the Black Sea RB is satisfacotry. However, there is some loweriing of water levels which is not caused only by groundwater overexploitation, but also by other factors, such as construction of hydrpower facilities in Slovenia, regulation of the Sava tributaries, gravel exploatation et.c. Negative influence on GW quantities in karst aquifers has not been determined to date. PRESSUSERS ON GW QUALITY IDENTIFICATION POINT SOURCES OF POLLUTION (INDUSTRIES, DISCHARGES FROM WASTERWATER SYSTEMS AND SOLID WASTE DIPOSALS) DIFFUSE SOURCES OF POLLUTION (AGRICULUTRAL SURFACES -N,P,K) ANALYSIS IDENTIFICATION PRESSURES ON ALL AVAILABLE MONITORING POINTS RISK ASSESSMENT MAP OF TROUNSBOUNDARY GW BODIES RISK ASSESMENT was based on geological and hydrogeological characteristics, groundwater quantity status, point and diffuse sources of pollution and groundwater quality in individual gw bodies . AT SIFNIFICANT RISK BLACK SEA RB – Varaždin (nitrate concentrations higher than maximum allowed concetrations for drinking water); Čabranka (influence of urban wastewater from surrounding settlements), Aluvial Sava –rigt and left coast (high composition of oil and organics, occasionaly NO3, Fe and Mn) ADRIATIC RB – Dragonja (excluded from water supply due to bacteriological pollution) Kalij – potassium ME

9 INSTITUTIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR WATER POLICY IN CROATIA
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Croatian Waters (national water agency) have direct resposiblity for integrated water managment in Croatia National Water Council, in charge of policies, strategies, and implementation of laws in water management INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN WATER POLICY Active regional cooperation - water management issues dealt with on the basis of bilateral agreements (with Hungary, Slovenia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina; agreements with Serbia and Monte Negro are being negotiated) General international cooperation is governed by the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Helsinki Convention, 1992) and the Protocol on Water and Health of the Helsinki Convention (2006) In the Black Sea Basin, International cooperation is regulated by the Convention on Cooperation for the Protection and Sustainable Use of the Danube River (Danube Convention, Sofia, 1994); Croatia is an active member of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) and a member of the International Sava River Basin Commission In the Adriatic Sea coastal region, Croatia is a party to various international treaties and agreements, particularly the Barcelona Convention and its six protocols As a candidate country for the EU membership (2005), the Republic of Croatia has committed to cooperate with the European Commission and EU Member States in the area of water management
