3. What is this about?
„A wise counselor and trusted teacher, personified by the mythological character, Mentor” (Donovan, 1990) „Mentoring is a multidimensional relationship that energizes personal and professional growth” (Wagner & Seymour, 2007)

4. Our vision
A process of shared interpersonal development where an experienced nurse or midwife guides a student to acquire the knowledge, skills, expertise and positive attitudes required for safe and effective practice.

5. Why is mentorship important?
Developing a standardised mentorship model will ensure that students are appropriately supported and assessed in practice settings, and they are fit to practice at the point of registration.

6. A mentorship model for Croatia

7. Who? Currently in Croatia there are: 30552 nurses 1844 midwives
This project is aimed at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels of nurses and midwives many of whom provide mentorship to students every day

8. Mentoring reaffirms with nurses and midwives their responsibility for:
developing and ensuring the practice competence of students
accountability for the decisions that lead those students entry to the professional register as nurses and midwives

Educational plan and programme for mentors of nurses
Educational plan and programme for mentors of midwives
The mentoring system for nurses at national level improved
The mentoring system for midwives at national level improved

10. What will we do? thereby improving the mentoring system
Working together with Croatian colleagues
review the undergraduate education of nurses and midwives
develop a mentorship programme for both professions
deliver the programme to nurses and midwives in 4 cities
(Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek)
These nurses and midwives will use the knowledge and skills acquired to cascade the programme to their colleagues
thereby improving the mentoring system
