2. Living in villas
The rich Romans lived in villas and palaces. Villas were large farms with a big house for the owners. They had lots of servants and farm workers to help run the villa.

3. The Roman Villa
A rich Roman house had many rooms including; kitchen, bathrooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and rooms for slaves.
A long covered porch was built along the front of the house to keep the rooms cool in the summer.

4. Slaves
Slaves did most of the work for their masters and worked to give them comfort. They did cooking, cleaning, washing, farming.

5. Technology
Some Roman homes were kept warm with an underfloor heating system called a 'hypocaust'. The floor was raised up by piles of tiles or stone pillars to allow warm air to circulate.

6. Mosaics
The floors of Roman buildings were decorated with mosaics. The rich villa owners could afford their own designs.
