5. Complex Sentences
Have one independent and at least one dependent clause

Because there were no more peanut butter cups, Mrs. DeSantis was upset although she had already eaten six.

6. Compound-Complex Sentences
At least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause
Mr. Maffei ate the food, and as he was leaving the house, he locked the door.
Because of his allegiance to the Yankees, Mr. DeSantis cried when they lost, but Mr. James laughed.
Since he hated exercise, Mr. Jones gained weight, and as he gained more weight, he became obese.
