3 Normal Conflict vs bullying
Mutually competitive or opposing action or engagement Includes disagreements, arguments, or fights Intent is not to humiliate, embarrass, or demean A normal part of growing up Bullying Is one-sided Causes harm Is meant to diminish the sense of self-worth of the target Continues even when the target becomes distressed or objects to it

4 Examples Normal Conflict
Joey and Dylan both push their way to the front of the line to lead the class to the assembly. Melissa and Emily argue over who is the new girl’s best friend. Bullying Joey organizes his friends to all push Dylan out of the way so he can be the first in line. Melissa tells the new girl she has to choose – she can be Melissa’s friend only if she doesn’t talk to Emily.

5 Definition of hib “Harassment, intimidation, or bullying” means any gesture, any written, verbal or physical act or any electronic communication, whether it is a single incident or a series of incidents, that is: reasonably perceived as being motivated by either any actual or perceived characteristic; or by any other distinguishing characteristic; that takes place on school property, at any school-sponsored function, on a school bus, or off school grounds; that substantially disrupts or interferes with the orderly operation of the school or the rights of other pupils; and that Motivation Location

6 Definition of hib a reasonable person should know under the circumstances will have the effect of physically or emotionally harming a pupil or damaging the pupils property, or placing a pupil in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm to his/her person or damage to his/her property, or has the effect of insulting or demeaning any pupil or group or pupils, or creates a hostile educational environment for the pupil by interfering with a pupil’s education or by severely or pervasively causing physical or emotional harm to the pupil. 7 Reporting procedure Who must report?
All Board members, school employees, volunteers, and contracted service providers who have witnessed or have reliable information that a pupil has been subject to HIB Where to report? To the school’s Principal and/or Anti-Bullying Specialist When must it be reported? Verbal report must occur on the same day as you become aware of the incident Written report must follow within 2 days of the verbal report

8 TIMELINE FOR REPORTING
VERBAL REPORT On the same day person received information regarding incident WRITTEN REPORT Within 2 school days of when information was received INVESTIGATION INITIATED Within 1 school day of the report of the incident RESULTS REPORTED TO SUPERINTENDENT Within 2 school days of the completion of the investigation RESULTS REPORTED TO BOARD OF ED No later than the date of the next Board meeting following the completion of the investigation INVESTIGATION COMPLETED No later than 10 school days from written report date
