S3L1. Students will investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat. Identify features of animals that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of the world and Georgia Explain what will happen to an animal if the habitat is changed.

Tigers Are An Important Part of Our World
Tigers are the largest true carnivore in the world. Tigers live only in Asia. Tigers in the wild live to be about 15 years old. Tigers in the zoo live to be about 21 years old. The largest tiger is the Siberian tiger. The smallest tiger is the Sumatran tiger. Only 11% of the original Indian tiger’s habitats are left as they are subject to continuous hunting or poaching. Referring to the 2008 survey which was conducted in India, there is a 60% decline in the tiger’s population since 1973.

The Causes of Decline of Tigers

The Causes Of Decline Tigers
Tigers are the largest members of the cat family. At one time there were eight subspecies of tigers but since the 1950’s three have become extinct. Deforestation and hunting have significantly reduced the tiger populations.

The Causes of Decline of Tigers
. In addition tigers are sadly often hunted as trophies. Many tiger body parts are also used in traditional Chinese medicine which have also caused their dwindling numbers. The five remaining tiger subspecies are all endangered and under protection programs

Human Affect On Tigers People have been engaged in poisoning waterholes as well as setting steel wires to kill tigers selling tiger’s skin to the medicine industry. Hunters have an enormous impact on tigers by killing them for game and use for clothing. Deborah Aidoo Copyright 5Tigers.org

10
Human Affect On Tigers The clearing of forests for agriculture and timber pose serious threats to tiger habitats. Which leads to tigers which leads to a higher risk ofpoaching.

Current efforts by conservationist to preserve tigers
One of the earliest legislative efforts for the protection of tigers was the 1973 Federal Endangered Species Act, an environmental protection bill approved by Richard Nixon, President of the United States in that time. Copyright 5Tigers.org

China, began to support the conservation of these animals during the 1980s. In 1988 the government passed the Law on the Protection of Wildlife, cataloging the tiger as a protected species. Copyright 5Tigers.org

Biggest And Smallest of Our Endangered Species of Tigers
