1 Best Practices Goals and Approach
Why Care About Privacy Settings? Not all social media is created equal – social media use on one site may be different on another site. Privacy settings should match your use. Considerations LinkedIn Facebook Purpose Network and communicate Share and communicate Audience Colleagues, Clients, Vendors Friends, Family, Associates Privacy Goal You and your content are easy to discover and view. Profile is searchable, but make activity secure Approach Profile and activities viewable by everyone. Hide contacts from competitors. Activities displayed only to people whose invites you’ve accepted. Only make your profile searchable.

3 Access Profile Settings – 2 steps
1 In the top right hand corner, click on your picture and choose “Privacy & Settings” in the drop down menu. Scroll down to the bottom middle of the page and select “Profile” to open up “Privacy Controls” STEP 2

4 Activity Broadcasts Activity broadcasts display actions outside of status updates and engagement. RECOMMENDATION: Turn off. Leave check box blank. We suggest you focus your activity feed on meatier status updates.

5 Activity Feed Activity feed controls who sees your actions.
RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Everyone” or “Your Network”. We suggest you aim to be transparent and to expose your posts to as many people as possible.

6 Viewed Someone’s Profile
LinkedIn allows users to see who has viewed their profile. This information can be discreet or showcase your full profile. RECOMMENDATION: Check “Your name and headline”. We suggest you strive to be transparent and visually recognizable.

7 Connection Visibility
LinkedIn users have the ability to see your network through your profile. RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Only You”. We suggest you not make your potential clients and connections viewable to others.

8 Profile Photo & Visibility
You can control who sees your LinkedIn photo. RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Everyone” or “My Network”. We suggest you maintain transparent and recognizable profile so client or potential client searches reveal you more readily.

On your profile, visitors can see what profiles other visitors looked at in addition to yours. RECOMMENDATION: Turn off and uncheck box. We suggest you keep your clients and network hidden if possible.

1 In the top right hand side of the Facebook navigation bar, click on the lock icon. 1 2 When the drop down menu appears, click on “Who can see my stuff?” to access privacy settings. 2

12 Facebook – Change Privacy Settings
1 A 2 1 Sets the default audience that will be selected to see your posts. RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Friends”. Content is only being seen by people you chose to connect with. Changes the visibility of all previous posts to “Friends”. RECOMMENDATION: Do not modify (unless you want to set all of your previous posts to a specific privacy setting) 2 PUBLIC: everyone can see all your post FRIENDS: your friends can see your post ONLY ME: only you can see your posts CUSTOM: define specific people, lists, or “friends of friends” A

13 Facebook – Change Privacy Settings
1 2 1 Sets how accessible your profile is when people search by your or phone number RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Everyone”. Encourage people to proactively search for you. 2 Sets your Facebook Timeline visibility in search engines (i.e. Google & Bing) RECOMMENDATION: Leave “On” to encourage people to connect when searching by your name. EVERYONE: You can be found by anyone with your or phone number FRIENDS OF FRIENDS: People connected to your friends can find you by or phone number FRIENDS: Only friends who you’ve connected with can search by your or phone number A

1 2 3 4 Sets who can post to your timeline RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Friends”. Allow friends to actively communicate and share on your timeline. 1 Moderate what photos appear on your timeline when you’ve been “tagged” in a photo or post RECOMMENDATION: Set to “On”. Control what photos and updates you want to be associated with. 2 3 Control who sees content you’ve been tagged in RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Friends”. Share only with people you trust and have connected with. Moderate who sees when your friends posts on your timeline RECOMMENDATION: Set to “Friends of Friends”. Allow others to participate in your friends conversations. 4
