The cost of smoking is not only monetary. What are some of the costs we have discussed in class so far? The age to legally purchase tobacco products is 18 Today, a pack of cigarettes cost almost $10 a pack So let's say at age 18, someone becomes a pack a day smoker... In 1 year... $3,650.00 In 5 years... $18,250.00 In 10 years... $36,500.00 In a lifetime (age 85) ... $244,550.00 The Cost of Smoking

Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms: Cravings to smoke Irritable, cranky Insomnia Fatigue Inability to Concentrate Headache Cough Sore throat Constipation, gas, & stomach pain Dry mouth Sore tongue and/or gums Postnasal drip Tightness in the chest a term used to describe the effects felt by a person who is nicotine dependent and suddenly stops or significantly reduces his/her nicotine intake.

Strategies to help Many people use nicotine substitutes when first deciding to quit. These are products that deliver small amounts of nicotine into the user’s system while he or she is trying to give up the tobacco habit. Gum, patches, nasal spray, inhalers, lozenges. Others try to quit “cold turkey” ONLY 50% OF SMOKERS WHO TRY AND QUIT ARE SUCCESSFUL!

Get support and encouragement Identify health-related services in the community Replace tobacco with a healthier alternative

Help a friend or loved one STOP!
S: show concern. Approach the person in a caring nonjudgemental way. Use I messages. T: take a time to plan. Put a plan on paper. Help the person set objectives and goals for strategies to stop smoking and to cope with tobacco cravings. O: offer support. Put the plan into action. Be involved in person’s journey to quitting. Ride a bike together, attend a meeting, shoot some hoops, be a listening ear. P: promote success. Let the person know you are proud of their choice for quitting. Let the person know they are doing great and celebrate milestones in the quitting process. Always provide ENCOURAGMENT.

Lights, Camera, Action! With a partner, come up with a script for a situation in which a non-smoker is trying to convince a smoker to quit smoking or using tobacco products. On a piece of lined paper, create a script using AT LEAST 4 facts learned in class Make sure to include both your names and period at the top of the paper- IT WILL BE COLLECTED Creativity Counts :) Only volunteers will have to read their scripts aloud
