Use the ladder handout to help you take notes about society in the 1770’s and today. NC SCOS: 1.07

4 Just above a slave is an Indentured Servant.
INDENTURED SERVANTS are people who agreed to work for another for a specified period of time (usually 4-7 years) in return for passage to the new world. They are socially higher than a slave.

5 Next are APPRENTICES or trade students
A person who learns a skill or trade from a master craftsman.

6 In 2012 these people are… STUDENTS. College or High School Could be on many different levels, from community college trade student to 4 year college student to a physician assistant. WHAT CURRENT JOBS DO YOU APPRENTICE AT TODAY?

7 YEOMAN Small farmers, these farmers produced enough for the family and usually a small amount to sell or trade Usually sold/traded specific items like eggs, wool, apples, milk, corn From: Latta Plantation Charlotte, NC

8 The Middle Class: have average status, income, education, tastes, etc.

9 ARTISANS = CRAFTSMEN & Minor Professionals A Craftsperson
Examples: blacksmith, tanner, cooper, toolers, silversmiths, builders, furniture makers.

10 Who are these people TODAY? Any Guesses????
Hints UPPER MIDDLE CLASSES Usually have more than 4 years of college or are successful inventors.

11 GENTRY The highest class, these are the upper class, wealthy professionals, government officials and wealthy landowners (planters) Its good to have land

12 The UPPER CLASS LESS THAN 2% OF THE POPULATION IS WEALTHY.
