The perks of being wallflower-trailer
2
Sound The music in the trailer was generally positive and happy, main instruments were stringed instruments such as banjo and guitar. All music was non diegetic sound as it was played in the background whereas there was a lot of diegetic sound such as the dialogue between the characters and cheering in the crowd at an American football game. The song in the trailer is It’s Time- By Imagine Dragons. This songs is a fast, upbeat song mainly played by strings, this connotes happiness, hope and messing around: gives an image of informality and non seriousness.

Mise En Scene The play is mainly set in a high school in America, with other scenes at restraunts, in cars or in houses. Majority of the scenes are set in the daytime while it’s light. This gives a positive connotation and gives the impression of happiness and simplicity. The costumes in the film are mainly normal teenager style clothes; boys wearing jeans and t-shirts and girls wearing skirts and jeans and stuff, and teachers wearing suits. However, all the costumes change on prom night: everyone’s completely overdressed, boys wearing suits and girls wearing dresses. The change in costumes suggests a change in importance of the situation, and give an impression the people feel like they have something to prove on prom night so try to make themselves look better.

Editing The continuity editing in the trailer makes the sequence look like it all links together and it improves the fluidity of the trailer, this is good because it makes the audience view it as someone’s real life and shows that there is no breaks. The trailer as a whole is a montage, because it shows the course of a kids whole high school time in about 5 minutes, but realistically it’s about 5 years. There is an excessive use of fade to black, particularly at the beginning of the trailer, perhaps this is a signal of a new chapter in his life, and that going to high school is a new beginning for him. Lastly, on title screens such as the one below, there’s a rhythm cut with every letter on the title screen, making the audience realize the importance of the words on the screen.

Camera Work They use a lot of close ups on people’s faces to show their emotion, mainly to show happiness, and the close ups generally happen when they are talking to one of their friends or partner. Long shots are used to show settings in the play, such as the school or the city, they do this so you can see everything in the scene.
