Summary Roanoke was the first English colony in North America but was unsuccessful after both attempts. Jamestown was owned by the Virginia Company of London (which was a joint stock company), and was the first successful colony in the Americas. It thrived after the colonists began to produce tobacco. The colonists were unhappy that they didn’t have a say in their settlement and the House of Burgesses developed.
