2. Learning Goal
Students will be able to analyze historical and political maps, analyze and sequence information about early Colonial America, and evaluate and use primary sources and other appropriate resources to obtain factual information. Students will also be able to identify points of view of the leaders of colonies and explain their impact on the colony.

3. The Lost Colony of Roanoke
1584- Sir Walter Raleigh founded Roanoke Island
Given land by Queen Elizabeth I
settlers are in colony of Roanoke
First settlers to the new colony
They left after a harsh winter

4. The Lost Colony of Roanoke
1587- More settlers went to Roanoke
91 men, 17 women, 9 children
John White, explorer and leader of group gained a granddaughter after the arrival of the new group
Virginia Dare was the first English child born in North America
White returned to England for supplies but could not sail back due to war between Spain & England
Returned but they had vanished and were never seen again
Only found a post with “croatoan” carved on it

5. The Virginia Company
Was a joint-stock company which funded settlement of Jamestown.
Investors owned part of the profits produced in the colony

6. Jamestown Settlement (1607)
Virginia Company owned the colony
Settlers were looking for good trade (fish & fur), and search for gold

Lots of mosquitoes which carried diseases
Hardships
Had bad farmland- people did not know how to work land
Did not have necessary resources to survive because of search for goods and trading.
of 140 settlers were still alive

9. Farming the Land The search for gold & silver was unsuccessful
John Rolfe figured out a way to grow tobacco with seeds from the West Indies
Colonies along the James River (east into Virginia) were growing tobacco and making lots of money
Relations with Native Americans prospered when Rolfe married Pocahontas
People began privately growing tobacco for their own gain- people worked harder to succeed.
Colonies did better because of competition
Colonists who paid own way to Virginia were granted 100 acres of land by the VA Company.
Helped bring more people to the colony

10. Representative Government House of Burgesses
Colonists grew tired of taking orders from the Virginia Company in London
They were allowed to set up their own rules
10 towns sent 2 burgesses (representatives) to Jamestown
Was the first representative government in the colonies

11. First African Americans
1619- a Dutch ship brought in 20 Africans who had been sold to work for Virginia planters as servants.
These African laborers were free until about 1640
Slavery was first recognized in Virginia in the 1660s

13. Summary
Roanoke was the first English colony in North America but was unsuccessful after both attempts.
Jamestown was owned by the Virginia Company of London (which was a joint stock company), and was the first successful colony in the Americas. It thrived after the colonists began to produce tobacco.
The colonists were unhappy that they didn’t have a say in their settlement and the House of Burgesses developed.
