Refined Products from one Barrel of Crude Oil
August 19, 2013 After crude oil is removed from the ground, it is sent to a refinery. Different parts of the crude oil are separated into useable petroleum products. A barrel contains 42 gallons of crude oil and produces almost 45 gallons of petroleum products. The increase from processing the crude oil is similar to what happens to popcorn, which gets bigger after it’s popped. Table 1.6 shows the amounts of the different products obtained from one barrel of crude oil. In Table 1.6, the amounts of the different products obtained from the refining process are given in measurements of: A. Barrels B. Gallons C. Quarts D. Barrel-gallons Table 1.6 Refined Products from one Barrel of Crude Oil (1 Barrel = 42 gallons) Product Amount (gallons) Diesel 10.31 Heating Oil 1.38 Jet Fuel 4.07 Heavy Fuel Oil 1.68 LP Gases 1.72 Gasoline 18.56 Other 7.01 Total 44.73
