He had twice cheated (обманул) the devil, and after his death could not go either to heaven (ни в рай) - because of his terrible life, or hell (ни в ад) - because the devil did not take away his soul.

Some children and not only children play a game “Trick or treat”. People wear costumes of different wickedness , go from home to home and ask for candy and other sweets. They knock at the door of your house and say: “Trick or treat”. If you give them some “treat” they will go away. If not, they can play a “trick” on you!
