1 Storage and Multimedia

2 Optical Storage Devices
Most widely used and reliable storage devices Use laser technology to store data and read data to and from the disk Most popular storage devices are: CD-ROM drive DVD-ROM drive CD-Recordable drive CD Re-Writeable Drive Some optical storage media is read-only while others are read and write

3 Optical Storage Devices
An optical storage media consists flat, round, portable metal disc, which is coated with a thin metal or plastic or other material that is highly reflective These discs are usually 0.75 inches in diameter and less than one-twentieth of an inch thick The information on the optical disk is stored in the form of pits and lands

4 Optical Storage Devices

5 CD-ROM Stands for Compact Disc Read-Only Memory
Uses laser technology to store and to read data to and from the disc Once the information is stored, it becomes permanent and cannot be changed Information can be read only for processing That’s why it is called read only memory CD-ROM drive used with computer to read the information from the CD-ROM

6 DVD-ROM Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile disc
Extremely high capacity storage disc with storage capacity from 4.7 GB to 17GB Latest generation of DVD-ROM disks actually layers of data tracks Reads the data from the first layer, and then look through it to read data from the second layer and so on

7 CD-R CD-R stands for Compact Disc Recordable
It is a blank disc that is used to store the information Also write the data on the optical disc The process of writing the data on the optical disc is called burning Functionally equivalent to pre-recorded CD-ROM

8 CD-Writer A CD-Writer or recorder is used to write data on CD-R Disks
Read the information from CD as well as write information on CD More expensive than ordinary CD-ROM drives

9 CD-RW & CD-RW Drive Stands for Compact disc Rewritable
New generation of optical disc Erasable disc Can write and overwrite the data on the CD-RW disc many times Acts like floppy and hard disk Reliability of the disc tends to decrease, each time you rewrite the data CD-RW drive is used to write the data on the CD- RW

Online Storage Smart Cards Flash Memory Devices

11 Multimedia Multimedia refers to the application in which text, graphics, animation, audio and video effects are integrated to provide a completely interactive interface through a computer system User gives input through a variety of input devices and takes output also through a variety of output devices Main uses of multimedia applications are in video games, computer based training

12 Advantages Allow the computer user to communicate with the computer system Gives a real world impression Communicate with people in remote location Do not need to convert data into computer acceptable form Student and trainees find it easy to understand Can be connected to other machines and electronic devices People get attraction towards computer learning Use of computer product increase in business environment

13 Disadvantages Overall cost of computer increases
Computer user must be well trained Sometimes overall performance of computer slows down A proper maintenance is must Sometimes if any of the attached device gets out of order, all the system stops it working Remote connection must be reliable and fast
