Module 2: Microsoft Azure overview
Thank you for taking the time to view this training session. In this session, we will provide an overview of Microsoft Azure. The cloud for the modern business
2
What are we selling? Microsoft Azure is an Internet-scale computing and services platform hosted in data centers that are managed or supported by Microsoft. It includes many separate features with corresponding developer services which can be used individually or together. Microsoft Azure provides access to compute power, networking, and caching, all on a global scale. You can load your apps and virtual machines to run on it in an all-in mode or in a hybrid mode.

Benefits of cloud services like Microsoft Azure
It’s IaaS + PaaS Azure is the only major cloud platform ranked by Gartner as an industry leader for both infrastructure- as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS). This powerful combination of managed and unmanaged services lets you build, deploy, and manage applications any way you like for unmatched productivity. It’s economical and scalable Azure can quickly scale up or down to match demand, so you only pay for what you use. Per- minute billing and a commitment to match competitor prices for popular infrastructure services like compute, storage, and bandwidth means you’re always getting unbeatable price for performance. It’s everywhere Azure runs on a growing global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters across 13 regions, giving you a wide range of options for running applications and ensuring your customers always get great performance. Azure is the first multinational cloud provider in mainland China and is continuing to expand to new regions around the globe. It’s always up, always on You’ll share the same enterprise-tested platform that powers Skype, Office 365, Bing, and Xbox. Azure offers a 99.95% availability SLA, 24x7 tech support, and round-the-clock service health monitoring. That’s why more than 57% of Fortune 500 companies rely on Azure today. From live streaming Olympic events to online multiplayer online games, our customers are doing some amazing things. It’s open and flexible Azure supports any operating system, language, tool, and framework— from Windows to Linux, SQL Server to Oracle, C# to Java. It puts the best of Windows and Linux ecosystems at your fingertips, so you can build great applications and services that work with every device. It’s hybrid ready Some cloud providers make you choose between your datacenter and the public cloud. Not Azure. Its enterprise-proven hybrid cloud solutions give you the best of both worlds, expanding your IT options without added complexity. With Azure, data storage, backup, and recovery become more efficient and economical. It’s also easier to build applications that span both on premises and the cloud. Why are people going to the cloud? Why are people going to Microsoft Azure? They recognize the benefit of infrastructure-as-a-service or the benefit of a platform-as-a-service, which includes agility, flexibility, and speed to market. They recognize the economic and scalability advantages of deploying into the cloud. Microsoft Azure is always up and always on, with a 99.95% monthly Service Level Agreement (SLA) that is monetarily-backed and running in wholly-owned Microsoft-managed data centers around the world. That’s what customers see in Microsoft Azure. It’s open and flexible. It’s not just a .NET world out there. We support Linux. We support Java. We made an announcement around Websphere on IBM and DB2. We already had the announcement around Oracle and Sybase. It’s all-encompassing and it’s hybrid-ready. Especially with larger customers, they’ve invested in a huge infrastructure. They’re not looking to you to rip and replace what they already have. But if they’re looking to build something new, to add something new, to extend something, your expertise is what they want to come in and help them understand. We give you best-of-breed services on the cloud, on premises, or in a hybrid model.

What can you do with Azure?
Build infrastructure Provision Windows and Linux virtual machines and applications in minutes. Use the same virtual machines and management tools in Azure that you use on premises. Virtual Machines | Virtual Network | Storage | Backup | Site Recovery | Big Compute Develop modern applications Build and deploy a wide variety of modern applications for Android, iOS, and Windows that take full advantage of the cloud—including web, mobile, media and line-of-business solutions. Automatically scale up and down to meet any need. Websites | Mobile Services | Media Services | Integration | Dev-Test Gain insights from data Azure provides managed SQL and NoSQL data services and built-in support for gaining insights from your data. Leverage the full power of SQL Server in the cloud and use HDInsight to build Hadoop clusters to analyze data. SQL Database | HDInsight | Machine Learning Preview What things can you build? In the infrastructure arena, you can provision virtual machines in minutes, from small ones to gigantic ones like the G-series. You can set up a highly secure, virtual private network into that environment so it’s just an extension of your private network. You can take advantage of storage at $0.02 per gigabyte. That’s cheap storage that you can use for backup, failover, or site recovery. You have a massive amount of compute power. You can develop modern applications, whether that’s a highly scalable website or a brand-new marketing website. How long does a marketing campaign last? Two weeks? Two months? And then it’s done. So what do you do with the infrastructure to run that campaign? In the old days, that’s a big investment. Today, you just bring it down and stop paying for it. Everybody wants to go mobile with their apps. How do you extend your legacy apps into the mobile world? Azure is the perfect place to build the apps in the mobile space. We have support for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. You build your apps up here. You authenticate your apps up here. Do the back-end integration in the hybrid model. You can help customers gain more insight into their data. We have our own Hadoop adoption. Hadoop running on Azure is marketed as HDInsight. You have SQL databases now that inherently recognize a hybrid model. You can have a sophisticated SQL cluster with some clusters on-premises and some clusters in the cloud. You can develop machine-learning capabilities. Last but not least, you can manage identity, whether it’s your primary Active Directory, a backup disaster recovery site for your Active Directory, or you want to implement multi-factor authentication. Manage identity and access Manage user accounts, synchronize with existing on-premises directories, and get single sign on across Azure, Office 365, and hundreds of popular software-as-a-service applications including Salesforce, DocuSign, Google Apps, Box, Dropbox, and more. Active Directory | Multi-Factor Authentication
