INTRODUCTION THE BRITISH EMPIRE WAS WHERE BRITAIN RULED OVER A DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. An 'empire' is a group of countries ruled over by a single monarch or ruling power. An empire doesn't need an 'emperor'. The British Empire comprised Britain, the 'mother country', and the colonies, countries ruled to some degree by and from Britain. The British began to establish overseas colonies in the 16th century. By 1783 Britain had a large empire, with colonies in America and the West Indies. This 'first British Empire' came to end after the American Revolution.

Why build an Empire and what did it bring?
When they had hold of the countries, Britain made the people slaves to bring in trade for the country. It worked very well and a lot of money was made. They needed the money as they wanted to become such a powerful and influential country that they wouldn’t of been without the empire. With this power and money, Britain grew to being one of the most powerful and rich countries in the world.

POWER The British Empire brought a strong army as the different countries that were ruled were trained by Britain to be the best. With a strong army, the empire was able to grow. They could win land in major battles with the massive well trained army they had. As well as the army, Britain spread the Christianity of their country to the ones in the empire. This meant they all practised the same principles and follow the same rules so their were no excuses.

Christianity in British empire
People believed that God wanted Britain to rule and to be the rich and for the rest to be poor which led to them being slaves. A song ‘all things bright and beautiful’, has had a verse taken out that related to rich and poor although it was taken out as it was thought wrong. ‘The rich man at the castle, the poor man at his gate. God made them high and lowly, and ordered their estate’.

ECONOMY Britain had the largest economy in the world at the time of the British empire but now they are only fifth in the world. With trade coming in from all the countries money came with it. The current consensus is that trade and empire were significant for British economic growth in the Hanoverian period, even if they were not decisively important. British hegemony in empire and trade by 1815 was such that Britannia did rule the waves;
