What’s Your Hurry? Finding Time For God
2
A Sermon For Me This sermon is for me.
I find I need to preach this sermon to myself, first. Everyone else can listen in if you like. Overwhelmed lately with all the things I feel I NEED to do. Living a lifestyle of hurry – there’s a real danger in doing so.
3
What’s Your Hurry? Visiting preacher Andy Griffith Show.
“Why this senseless rush, this mad pursuit, this frantic competition, this pace that kills? Why do we drive ourselves as we do…? We bolt our breakfast, we scan the headlines, we run to the office….We drive ourselves from morn to night.”
4
Wouldn’t It Be Nice If… Man visited by a Martian. Granted a wish.
Wishes for everything in his life to happen without having to wait. No waiting in line. No stopping at traffic signals, etc. Ended up miserable. Why?
5
The Danger In So Much Hurry
Psalm 127:1-2 – “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; for He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.”
6
Striving after wind? Ecclesiastes 4:6 – “One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind.” How much of what we are doing is striving after wind? With a simpler lifestyle could we find some rest?
7
Needs? Lusts? Greedy Love?
1 Timothy 6:10 --For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 2 Timothy 2:22 -- Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Too Busy For The Lord? We must not forget Martha.
Bustling around trying to make dinner for the Lord. Upset because her sister Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet and not helping. Complains to Jesus. Reminded of what is important: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary….” Luke 10:38-42
9
And What About David? Psalm 55:2, 22 – “Give heed to me and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted…Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”
10
Is HURRY Really Healthy?
“Hurry is not of the devil, hurry IS the devil.” – Carl Jung “He who sows hurry reaps indigestion.” – Robert Louis Stevenson
11
Learning To Slow Down Jesus offers us rest and peace
John 14:27 -- Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
12
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
13
Allow Time For Regeneration
Mark 6: The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)
14
Especially prone to hurry as we get older
“What’s a man’s age? He must hurry more, that’s all; cram in a day, what his youth took a year to hold.” –Robert Browning, The Flight of the Duchess
15
If We pursue anything it should be righteousness
Matthew 6: Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
16
Romans 14:19 So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.
17
A Matter Of Balance Hebrews 6:11-12 – “And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
