Overview For this project, you will be placed into a group, with each group becoming the experts on their chosen topics. Each individual in the group will be responsible for researching and writing an individual report about their assigned topic and their sociological analysis of their group. Each group will be responsible for assimilating their research into a PowerPoint presentation and teaching the information to the class Sociology 1, Chpt. 1 Project

Group Topics Group 1: Textbook pgs. 4-8 – Sociological Perspective and Sociology & Other Sciences Group 2: pgs – Origins of Sociology including Auguste Comte, Herbert Spence, and Karl Marx Group 3: pgs – Origins of Sociology continued, including Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Values, Verstehen, & Social Facts Group 4: pgs – Sexism, Sociology in North America including Harriet Martineau, Jane Addams, W.E.B. DuBois Group 5: pgs – Sociology in North America continued, with Talcott Parsons, C. Wright Mills. Will include information about the University of Chicago’s present day Sociology Department and types of careers using applied sociology Group 6: pgs – Theoretical Perspectives in Sociology – Symbolic Interactionism, with Charles Horton Cooley and George Herbert Mead. Include the explanation of the theory as applied to divorce. Group 7: pgs – Theoretical Perspectives in Sociology, cont.d – Functional Analysis with Robert Merton, and Conflict, and levels of analysis. Sociology 1, Chpt. 1 Project

Individual Responsibilities
You must have your own research topic as decided by the group You must compose a three-page report in MLA format with Works Cited (if used sources other than the textbook). The report will explain the topic assigned to the individual and analyze the experience as group member. Report is worth 50 pts, double-weighted Analysis: explain the role the person played in the group, and how the group functioned together. Must include information about each person in the group (first and last name, grade level, responsibilities) Report must meaningfully include 5 or more underlined terms from Chapter 1 within the report (not just a list) The report’s conclusion will include what the individual learned from this project (including what was learned from being part of this particular group) Sociology 1, Chpt. 1 Project

Rubric for Individual Report
1. The student’s individual research was explained well, showing understanding and knowledge of the assigned topic. = 15 pts. 2. The student’s specific role in the group’s function was noted along with an analysis of how the student felt the group functioned together. = 10 pts. 3. The student listed each person in their group including each person’s first and last name, their grade level, and the responsibility of each person. = 5 pts. 4. The student concluded with what he or she learned from being a part of this group and from completing this sociological project. = 5 pts. 5. The paper was done with attention to detail and had evidence of conscientious effort. All words were spelled correctly and there were little or no grammar /punctuation errors. 5 or more underlined terms/concepts from Chapter 1 were used in the report. = 10 pts. 6. The Works Cited page was in proper MLA format, listing the resource(s) used for the presentation of their topic. One of the sources was the textbook. = 5 pts. Sociology 1, Chpt. 1 Project

Group Responsibilities
The group will assign roles and topics to each member of the group. Suggested roles/functions: Leader, timekeeper, editor, proofreader In addition to the group’s topic(s), each group must also choose a social agency to research that is an example of applied sociology. Include one social problem the agency helps resolve and how. Include enough information to satisfy the curiosity of one who may wish to volunteer at this agency. Compose and present a PowerPoint presentation that will: Introduce each group member to the class, including their social location Teach the assigned topics to the class Meaningfully use 10 sociological terms from Chapter One. The terms must be underlined and must be used throughout the presentation (not a list) Include photos and/or graphics, cited on each slide where used. (continued on next slide….) Group members must present using notecards Presenters must not read from the slides and must look at the audience, not the slides. Extra credit if all your team members dress professionally and/or obviously as a team (i.e., match the colors of the PowerPoint slides) PowerPoint must be uploaded to Moodle on the day of the presentation Organize the PowerPoint as follows: Title slide: assigned topic(s) and page #s from the textbook Slide that will introduce the individuals in your group Approximately 2 slides per person’s topic, including the non-profit organization Final slide to close the presentation The presentation will have a total of no more than 15 slides. Rubric for Group Presentation
1. Each presenter knew their topic well, pronounced the terminology correctly, and had confidence in their level of knowledge = 20 pts. 2. Each presenter used notecards; the slides were not read to the audience; the presenters looked at the audience, not the screen. = 5 pts. 3. There were 10 underlined sociological terms from Chapter One effectively used throughout the presentation. = 10 pts. 4. The project was done with attention to detail and had evidence of conscientious effort. There were no paragraphs and no content overload. All words were spelled correctly and there were little or no grammar/punctuation errors. 5. All the required slides were in the presentation. Sample Timeline Day One: Introduction to project, assign groups and roles, organize group functions, start research. Day Two: Continue research, start PowerPoint slides. Day Three: Group and/or individual reports, finish research, finish slides; work on individual reports, work on notecards Day Four: Presentations; upload presentation to Moodle Note: If/when you have “down” time, work on your individual report and your Chpt. 1 Study Sheet, Part 2 Sociology 1, Chpt. 1 Project
