Understand the current requirements for scholarly activity
Be familiar with strategies to turn daily work into scholarly activity
Understand the steps involved in completing many scholarly activity projects
Become familiar with available departmental and campus resources

3. What is “Scholarly Activity?”

Research is a process or activity in which knowledge is tested or developed.
Scholarly activity refers to an oral or written presentation that reflects a thorough and critical collection of knowledge.

“Research can broadly be described as a process of investigation or inquiry that leads to the acquisition of new knowledge….
Epidemiology
Behavioral sciences
Ethics
Education
Information science
…and so forth
are all suitable areas for research activity. In the study of normal and disease processes, research may be basic (laboratory-based), translational (applied) or clinical (human studies).

Scholarly activity may also include the synthesis of new ideas, writing textbooks and monographs, and the application of fundamental knowledge to research, technology transfer, software design, website design, or other activities related to information sciences, and the development of innovative teaching methods.“

6. What is “Scholarly Activity?”
It does not need to be an intensive, grant-funded research project!

7. The faculty must establish and maintain an environment of inquiry and scholarship with an active research component.
Some members of the faculty should also demonstrate scholarship by one or more of the following:
peer-reviewed funding
publication of original research or review articles in peer reviewed journals, or chapters in textbooks
publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national professional and scientific society meetings , or
participation in national committees or educational organizations
Faculty should encourage and support residents in scholarly activities

16. CCORDA (Center for Collaboration on Research Design and Analysis)
Seeks to advance clinical, basic, and translational research and public health research at UNMC and in the community and region
Provide expertise in the quantitative sciences, including:
Biostatistics
Epidemiology
Health services research

17. Center for Reducing Health Disparities
Goal: become a nationally recognized Center of Excellence serving the State of Nebraska by establishing and strengthening the health disparities research and program portfolios across the Center, College, Campus, and Community to reduce health disparities and achieve health equity.
Convenes academic-community teams to work on health equity issues, assists faculty to perform research related to health disparities, responds to appropriate funding mechanisms, and builds capacity within the Center, College, Campus, and Community to perform health disparity research.  
The Research Branch is available to provide a number of services to facilitate health disparities/health equity research including:
Literature reviews
Health disparity data requests
Consultation on study design of projects targeting underserved communities
Spanish translation services for IRB approved research related documents
Promotion and enrollment into research studies

18. What about the IRB???
Something is generally not considered scholarly activity until it is disseminated
Curriculum modifications and educational techniques do not, as such, need IRB approval…
However, when you collect data from people and disseminate it, IRB review is required
Most of this type of scholarly activity can be submitted using an exempt research application – shortest and easiest IRB to complete; fastest approval time
Reporting on educational processes doesn’t usually require IRB approval
Outcome evaluation activities will probably require IRB approval (if you’re collecting any kind of data from people)

Provides access to Electronic Health Care data for clinical and translational research.  This may include:
Feasibility studies
Cross-sectional studies
Health outcomes
retrospective data analysis
Quality improvement projects
Transfer of datasets to a registry
Case finding for subject recruitment

21. Clinical Research Center
An outpatient clinical research facility with skilled research nurses and a core laboratory which can also assists with inpatient protocols. 
Serves as a resource for the teaching and training of medical students, residents, fellows and other health providers in the skills of clinical investigation through a sponsored annual clinical research course, a quarterly clinical research coordinators workshop, review of fellow- sponsored research applications and individualized instruction on research billing.

23. REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture)
Researchers can design their surveys and provide interested participants a link to complete the survey that will work from any Internet-connected device, including mobile devices
Once a study has been completed, the system can provide a data file that is easily imported into statistical programs (such as R, SAS, SPSS, R) or spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel
