Battle of Wilderness (May 5-7, 1864) Commanders Union = Grant Confederate= Lee Union #’s = 101,000 Confederate #’s= 61,000 Day 1 General G.K. Warren attacks Ewell’s men on the right flank in the morning but thick forests effect his assault

5 Battle of Wilderness Day 1 Day 2
Confederate commander’s AP Hill & Ewell hold off assaults led by G.K. Warren & Winfield Scott Longstreet arrives just in time to save the right flank Day 2 Longstreet leads a surprise attack on the Union left flank but is wounded by his own men (survives) Result: Inconclusive; Grant withdraws

Spotsylvania (May 8-21, 1864) Union Commander= US Grant Nickname= “The Butcher” Confederate= Lee Union outnumbers Confederates 2X1 “Bloody Angle” 24 hour period of fierce hand to hand combat Result: Inconclusive; Grant withdraws Casualties- Union = 52,000 Confederates= 33,000

TOTAL WAR = Destroying civilian and military resources Why? Ruin the Southern economy and break the will to fight

8 Battle of Atlanta (July 22, 1864)
Union Commander= William Sherman Confederate Commander= John Bell Hood Union forces soundly defeat Hood capturing overwhelming his lines and capturing the city Significance: Propels Lincoln to win 1864 election Aftermath: Sherman goes on a March to the Sea (Savannah) using total warfare

9 Battle of Appomattox (April 9, 1865)
Final battle of the war Union Commander= Grant Confederate Commander= Lee Lee was forced to surrender the Richmond and was attempting to join up with remaining Confederate forces Union forces cut him off at Appomattox Union #’s = 100,000 Confed #’s = 28,000
