6 All Plans Come with Fiduciary Liability
Rule of Loyalty – A fiduciary must act solely in the interest of plan participants and their beneficiaries. Rule of Prudence – A fiduciary must act with the skill, care and diligence that a reasonable person familiar with such matters would exercise. Hiring an expert is required if the fiduciary lacks sufficient knowledge. Rules of Diversification – A fiduciary must diversify the investment of plan assets to minimize loss. Rule of Compliance – A fiduciary must follow the terms of the written plan document to the extent it is consistent with ERISA.

Should you put all 75% in one fund? Probably not. If you had $100,000 in your retirement plan, you would be exposing $75,000 to the performance of one fund. Our next step is to help you select the funds within your stock, bond, and capital preservation classes. This chart shows the mutual funds available to you. Notice that the chart shows the potential for risk and reward. As we move up the list of funds, they go from most conservative to most aggressive. Before we do this, let’s discuss briefly some terminology about the types of funds in your lineup: GROWTH – Growth fund managers seek stocks of companies that have strong prospects for growth in sales, profits or both. Fund managers may be willing to pay a premium for stocks with the greatest growth potential. VALUE – Value fund managers seek stocks of companies with a history of past profits but which currently aren’t in the investment limelight. They believe the stocks are undervalued and selling at bargain prices. BLEND - Fund contains a mix of both growth and value companies. CAPITALIZATION - (“Cap”) Refers to the market value of the companies within a stock fund. Calculated by multiplying the company’s stock price by the number of shares outstanding.
