Deep Officials - 201 August 14, 2017
2
Goals Pre-game roll / duties, coin toss How to stay focused when working deep. Emphasis on preventative officiating. Emphasis on talking the players up as needed Game clock exercise Goal Line and End Line Positioning and Mechanics Ball Mechanics
3
Pregame Rolls / Duties Back Judge: Field Judge/Side Judge:
Responsible for time – when to leave the locker room Instruct clock operators with S (both game clock and play clock) Measure and inspect game balls for each team, mark checked balls Inspect entire field with R Field Judge/Side Judge: Instruct ball retrievers on game duties. H/S and L/F will participate in instructing ball retrievers on their side. Review this info with all crew members before game starts!
4
Coin Toss Field Judge/Side Judge: Back Judge:
Escort Captains from sideline to numbers If the team members follow behind captains, stay at the numbers to keep them from going further If the team does not come out, then retreat to sideline for the toss Back Judge: Have a game ball ready for the kickoff
5
Staying focused Stigma - “watch 1 player…back pedal, back pedal, back pedal” Dead ball officiating Preventative officiating Clock status Ball mechanics – “let colors separate” Substitution Penalty enforcement
6
Preventative officiating
Get player’s name – “Hey Jason” works better than “Hey #25” If possible, talk to both players at same time Engage Captains / Coaches as needed Know the Automatic Unsportsmanlike Actions
7
Automatic Unsportsmanlike Actions
Throat slash Demonstrations of violence such as “six guns” or “machine guns” Removal of helmet to celebrate or protest Heisman pose Gestures with sexual connotation Dancing Somersault or flip High step Dunking the ball over the crossbar Spinning the ball Using forcible contact to push or pull an opponent off the pile Spitting on an opponent
8
Timing All game timing is the responsibility of the Side Judge Check clock on field, and how to communicate if changes need to be made (look for tenths of seconds during the last minute of pre-game) Back Judge is responsible for time intervals, team time outs, between quarters, and halftime ALL are responsible for errors in the game clock. Side Judge needs to be prepared to relay correct time, or keep time on the field if necessary
9
Timing Exercise Set your watch to 6:21 remaining in the quarter.
You will keep the game time as you watch the video. Use high school timing rules: Start/stop for first downs, incompletions, penalties, runs out of bounds, and scores. Be alert for the “Ready for Play!!!” warnings to start your watch after First Downs! To access the video go to:
10
Timing Exercise What time should remain? The correct time remaining is 1:45
11
Goal Line Mechanics The Head Linesman should coordinate when to push the deep wings from the Goal Line. This should happen when the ball is snapped from the 7 yard line or closer. Field/Side Judge need to make sure that they are both either on the Goal Line, or at the End Line. F should mirror the S, and S should be communicating with the H as to when to move.
12
Goal Line Mechanics Positioning on the goal line:
Start 3-4 yards back. It’s easier to move up, than to back up. Let the action come to you. Either straddle the Goal Line, or have your up-field foot on the line. Communicate with your LOS official if a play is close to the sideline that could be out of bounds before crossing the Goal Line. Avoid Pointing – this could mean different things to both officials and coaches/crowd. Use verbal communication, or head nods for ruling in bounds.
13
End Line Mechanics Positioning for F/S:
Start a yard off of the End Line pylon at a 45⁰ angle. This allows the official to move in one step to cover the Side Line or End Line One step her to cover the Side Line 1 yd. One step here to cover the End Line
14
Ball Mechanics Never get a replacement ball while there is is still a threat for a foul Field Judge/Side Judge gets a replacement ball from the ball person, relays the ball into the U after: A Free kick A Scrimmage Play when the ball becomes dead outside of the numbers If Field Judge/Side Judge has forward progress after a change of possession: Let the H/L get the replacement ball Hold the spot, put the old ball at your feet until the new ball is on the ground.
