5 This panel discussion aims at reflecting on the current Higher Education institution ICT deployment strategies.

6 Purpose/aim Expand on the work done by Trucano Michael in 2005 by answering amongst other questions the following : How are ICTs being used in South African Higher education sector? What do we know about the impact of ICTs on student learning? Are the students’ receivers or participants in the development of institutional ICT strategies? Is the ICT resource allocation prioritizing institutional operability rather than enhancing student learning environment? What do we know about the impact of ICTs on student motivation and engagement for learning? Role of ICT in assisting the Institutions in increasing their throuput rates

7 Presenter’s View It has been our observation that more investments within ICT support have been towards putting up structures for the operation of the university staff rather than laying proper foundations for student learning. Why? Inclusivity in Decision making process Quality enhancement Project: Section 5.3.4 The increased adoption of blended learning modes of delivery places a strain on universities’ ICT resources.(QEP phase 1 report ) 5.3.4 Technology challenges related to student support and development QEP: Technology challenges also affect institutions’ ability to monitor students’ performance. In some institutions there are not enough skilled IT support people, while in others the IT systems themselves may be problematic, either because of incompatibilities between systems that house different parts of the data or instability or both,
