Eddie’s fatherly relationship with Catherine
Catherine; “I just got it. You like it?... You like it ?... You like it, huh?” Eddie; “I don’t like the looks they’re givin’ you in the candy store. And with them new high heels on the sidewalk – clack, clack, clack. The heads are turnin’ like windmills. Chloe 1)Catherine is very interested in what Eddie’s opinion is of her new skirt, this is highlights how desperate she is for eddies attention as she keeps asking if eddie likes her new skirt and how much she wants him to admire her. She looks upto him as a father figure and cares about his opinion. Catherine acts childish around eddie and she craves his approval. 2)Eddie treats catherine as a child, in the way that he calls her “Katie” and “baby” . Also the fact that he keeps her in the house, shows how overprotective of her he is. Eddies comments about many of catherine’s aspects but doesn’t do the same with Beatrice, his wife. This shows that he is both concerened and interested and he discourages her from growing up and wants to keep her as safe as possible by telling her all the possible ‘dangers’ in the society. Eddie wants to also protect catherine’s virginity as he doesn't want her to grow up and wants to keep the attention she receives from males to a minimal. 3)Eddie is the man of the house and both women idolise and respect him. The fact that they run around and fetch things for him and make sure he is comfortable. But the audience can see that catherine has took on the role as acting as the wife as she greets him when he comes in as beatrice remains unseen. Catherine; “Here! I’ll light it for you” and “I’ll get you a beer”

Beatrice and Eddie’s love problems
Beatrice; “when am I going to be a wife again?” Eddie; “I want my respect, Beatrice, and you know what I’m talkin’ about.” Natalie 1)Beatrice’s problem is that her love for eddie is no longer returned and she is increasingly in conflict with her love for Catherine. Eddie and beatrice have marital problems, both physical and menatlly, as eddie is too caught up in his relationship with Catherine, and Beatrice notices this and confronts him about it. Beatrice goes from being innocent to desprate as she craves so much for eddies love again. This shows beatrice’s clear thoughts and she conveys that her feeling at the moment were not enough for her. Eddies feelings towards catherine have stopped him from wanting to sleep with his wife beatrice. 2)Eddie needs to feel respect from Beatrice and at first its prompted by Beatrice’s lack of attention to his continued denial about Catherine moving out. Eddie doesn’t want to talk about this subject and he makes sure Beatrice knows this. 3)At the start of the play we can see that Beatrice is concerned about the relationship developing between Catherine and Eddie.as the play progresses Beatrice desperately tries to win eddie back on multiple occasions but doesn’t have such luck as his relationship with Catherine develops more. beatrice doesn’t feel enough to be eddie’s husband because eddie has too much emotion and attention towards catherine and not beatrice. Beatrice; “You want something else, Eddie, and you can never have her.”

Beatrice’s love for Catherine
Beatrice; “it means you gotta be your own self more.” Beatrice; “.. Or like you sit on the edge of the bathtub talkin’ to him when he’s shavin’ in his underwear.” 1)Beatrice encourages Catherine to grow up and move on so she can try to fix her relationship with eddie and get him to love her again as he is more interested in Catherine. She tries to encourage catherine to think for herself 2)Beatrice tells catherine that she can no longer do the things she used to do with eddie no more as she isnt a litte girl anymore and she has gown up both physically and mentally. we can hint that beatrice is jealous of catherine’s closeness to eddie . 3) Catherine has noticed that eddie and beatrice aint as close or as in love as they used to be. Beatrice; “you think I’m jealous of you honey”
6
Catherine and Rodolpho’s love for each other
Catherine ;“You married too?” … “I know, I just thought maybe he got married recently” Catherine; “You like sugar?” Rodolpho; “Sugar? Yes! I like sugar very much” 1)When catherine asks rodolpho if he is married, it comes across as more of an reqeust for informaion and its clear that to the audience hat catherine has took intererest in him and not marco as she comments on how blond he is. When she discovers he can sing she seems more intrested in him. 2) The audience know that this is rodolpho hinting that he is interested in catherine and he flirts with her. 3)This conveys that she is a passionate character. Catherine; stage directions ‘[with a blush but holding her ground.] Yeah, I like him.”
