4. MOTIVATION v. INSPIRATION
The ability to motivate people, in itself, isn’t difficult
Reason: usually tied to some external factor
Great leaders, in contrast, inspire people to act
“Those who truly lead are able to create a following of people who act not because they were swayed but because they were inspired.”
Those who are inspired will:
Pay a premium
Endure inconvenience

5. THE GOLDEN CIRCLE
The golden circle finds order and predictability in human behavior. It helps us understand why we do what we do. WHAT: every chapter knows what it does HOW: are often given to explain how something is different or better (like value proposition) WHY: why we do what we do (what is your chapter’s purpose, cause or belief)

We make great computers. They are beautifully designed, simple to use and user-friendly. Want to buy one?
How Apple actually communicates:
Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo. We believe in thinking differently. The way we challenge the status quo is by making our products beautifully designed, simple to use and user-friendly. And we happen to make great computers. Want to buy one?

7. OUR NEED TO BELONG It is not rational But it is strong and universal
“When we feel like we belong we feel connected and we feel safe. As humans we crave the feeling and we seek it out.”
When an organization clearly communicates their WHY and we believe what they believe, then we will sometimes go to extraordinary lengths to include those services in our lives. This is not because they are better, but because they are markers or symbols of the values and beliefs we hold dear.

8. FORMING A CULTURE
We’ve succeeded as a species because of our ability to form cultures.
Cultures are a group of people who come together around a common set of values and beliefs.
When we share values and beliefs with others, we form trust.
We’re friends with people who see the world the way we see it, who share our views and our belief set.
We do better in places that reflect our own values and beliefs. A BYUMS chapter is a culture, a group of people brought together around a common set of values and beliefs.
The goal is not to get people to join BYUMS who have some connection to BYU; the goal is to get members who believe what you and I believe

10. HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY START WITH WHY IN YOUR CHAPTER
Know the history of BYUMS
Know the divine mission of the BYUMS
Get a strong board (or at least as strong of a board as you can get)
Dedicate time to determine your chapter’s why

11. 1. KNOW THE HISTORY OF BYUMS
How it all began:
A visionary founder
Dean Merrill J. Bateman
39 years ago (1977)
A “premier” professional
Established “to extend the values and influence of the Marriott School and Brigham Young University throughout the world.”

12. 2. KNOW THE DIVINE MISSION OF THE BYUMS
Not just a trade organization
Not just a luncheon or breakfast group
We need members of the BYU Management Society to help build the moral base of our communities. You have standards, ideals, and values that will not only lead you to success, but will bless and strengthen this nation and all the world.

13. 3. GET A STRONG BOARD
Jim Collins, Good to Great – get the right people on the bus
To really have your Purpose Statement be awesome, have meaning, be inspiring, and lift people to join you on this wonderful journey you need some like-minded people.
That said, don’t delay – even if your meeting is with me, myself and I

14. 4. DEDICATE TIME TO DETERMINE YOUR CHAPTER’S WAY
Separate time, not part of your regular meeting
Have it be the only thing on your agenda
Give ample time for ideas
Write them all up
Then focus in on the real WHY

15. SAN DIEGO CHAPTER’S PURPOSE/VISION STATEMENT
We know that high morals and ethics are needed in our society, in our community and in our personal lives. To address this need we strive to become the preeminent business organization for San Diego in growing moral and ethical leadership around the world by meeting regularly, presenting inspirational speakers that can change lives, and providing a nurturing and caring environment to develop deep and meaningful personal relationships.
