Basics: 6th & 7th Grade Science Performance Task by Chandra Wilkemeyer, Regional Fair Director Biology Teacher, Liberty School

2 Flow of Science & Engineering Fairs
Classroom Fairs Classroom "Fairs" School Fairs Middle Schools: Select 6th - 8th graders High Schools: 9th -12th graders Regional Fair Jr. Div. – 6th -8th Sr. Div. – 9th - 12th *12 projects may be selected from each middle school to go on to the Regional Fair *10 projects will be selected from the Jr. Div. to earn a cash prize and participate in Broadcom Masters

3 Advanced Fair Opportunities
Regional Fairs State Fairs Intel ISEF: International Science and Engineering Fair Advanced Fair Opportunities Broadcom MASTERS: Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering Rising Stars Legend: Both Divisions (Grades 6-12) Junior Division Only (Grades 6-8) Senior Division Only (Grades 9-12)

4 Why is the Fair important?
Helps involve students in differentiated STEM activities. Helps boost science understand (and future SOL scores). View 2016 Highlights Video

School’s Science Fair Coordinator Parental Involvement – Crucial Involvement of Admin. Publicize – announcements / newsletters / school webpage / school media outlets

18 Science Fair Fun Help us get students excited about the Regional Science Fair by getting your students to submit a button design. The winning button design will be mass produced and used by the top Sr. Fair winner for the pin exchange at Intel ISEF in Los Angeles in May. The top prize is a $25 gift certificate Visit and click on contests to participate in the Button Contest.

19 Idea to Mull Some schools do totally digital fairs
Paperwork assignment, editing and storing. Powerpoint creation and editing. Powerpoint slideshow presentations given in class. Students prepare projects for judging by using voice recording to “present” as if judges were there. Judges are assignment projects to judge and sent links to judge virtually using a google form. Results are tallied digitally Teachers make sure each project is judged by the same number of judges. Only a few projects are selected and then printed out and turned into a poster board for the Regional Fair.

20 Potential Resource for Partially Digital Fairs
