Reading a Recipe

FIRST STEP Read the recipe all the way through, from beginning to end. This way you will know that you have all the ingredients and tools on hand. You will also be able to look up recipe terms you don't understand so cooking proceeds smoothly.

SECOND STEP After you have read the recipe, gather all the ingredients, pots, pans, bowls, and measuring utensils you will need. Go slowly and double check all the steps and ingredients. Do as much preparation prior as you can. Note: Measurements in recipes are critical. When a recipe calls for a tablespoon or teaspoon

Why do you think recipes tend to list the ingredients in the order they will be used in a recipe?

Third step The body of the recipe contains the instructions about combining and heating the ingredients. 1 cup nuts, chopped VS 1 cup chopped nuts ½ cup sifted flour ½ cup flour sifted

Cooking Terms Recipes use a variety of terms to describe exactly how to handle ingredients. If a recipe states, “pare an apple, then slice and dice it.” What do you do? Review the following cooking terms and see how many you know. ©Learning ZoneXpress
