The Arthropods Phylum Arthropoda Mr. Hooper April 2016

2 Phylum Arthropoda Phylum Arthropoda is the largest phylum of animals – there are more than one million identified arthropod species.

3 Cactus Longhorn Beetle
Phylum Arthropoda Arthropod is from the Greek words “Arthros” meaning joint and “podos” meaning leg or foot. The arthropods are divided into five major groups: Class Crustacea Class Arachnida Class Chilopoda Class Diplopoda Class Insecta Cactus Longhorn Beetle (Moneilema gigas)

4 Class Crustacea crayfish crabs shrimps sow bugs
Fiddler crab; crayfish; peppermint shrimp; sow bug sow bugs

5 ticks scorpions spiders Class Arachnida harvestmen

6 mites whip spiders pseudoscorpions solpugids Class Arachnida

7 Class Chilopoda Scutigera coleoptrata

8 Class Diplopoda

9 Class Insecta

10 Arthropods are invertebrates that have an external skeleton or exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed attachments called appendages.

11 Characteristics of Arthropods
Arthropods have bilateral symmetry. Arthropods have an open circulatory system. Arthropods have a complete digestive system (i.e. a digestive system with two openings). Most arthropods reproduce sexually.

12 Characteristics of Arthropods
The open circulatory system of spiders: it is an open network which means its arteries carry haemolymph, the arthropod equivalent of mammalian blood, out into the tissue spaces where it diffuses past individual cells before being collected back into the heart. There are few, if any, veins in this system and definitely no capillaries.

13 Characteristics of Arthropods: Exoskeleton
The exoskeleton is a waterproof outer covering. The exoskeleton provides protection and prevents water loss. The muscles of arthropods attach to the exoskeleton. As an arthropod grows larger, the hard exoskeleton cannot expand. Therefore, arthropods periodically shed their outgrown exoskeleton - a process called molting.

14 Characteristics of Arthropods: Appendages
Head louse - Pediculus humanus (SEM) The appendages of arthropods are jointed and highly specialized for moving, obtaining food, reproducing, and sensing the environment. Most arthropods have antennae that are appendages attached to the head containing sense organs.
