Introduction
Marykirk is a small primary school with a roll of 41, located south of Aberdeenshire. The school is in the Laurencekirk network and the head teacher is Fiona Thomson

What is a travel plan?
A travel plan is a document which encourages people to travel to our site in an eco-friendly, healthy and safe way’.
Lots of pupils who attend Marykirk primary already walk, which is great, however many have to cross the main road through the village (A937) which is very busy. This document provides some helpful information on how to be safe when travelling to school, and how car drivers can help keep everyone safe as well.

2. Hands Up Travel Survey Results
The graph shows our annual travel survey. You can see that we currently have more pupils walking to school than ever before therefore we need to make sure that pupils are able to keep on the roads.
What we have already achieved
We have already been working hard to improve out safety. We have been:
- learning about how to be bright and be seen
- learning about road signs, speeds and stoppage times of cars
- conducting walking audits and thinking about where it is safe to cross the road. We noticed lots of traffic in Marykirk and discussed why certain places were not safe to cross.
- investigating with the council options to improve crossings in the village.
Plan should be reviewed annually, the parent council should support its targets
Tips to keep you safe when walking to school.
Plan your route to school and discuss this with an adult then stick to this route
Find a good place to cross, this should be away from parked cars, have good visibility in both directions. There is no formal crossing in Marykirk so you must pay extra attention when crossing the road
Be bright and be seen, the more you stand out the more drivers will see you and slow down.
Be careful of driveways and narrow entrances
Stay alert and pay attention at all times.
Crossing the street safely 1) Stop at the kerb or edge of the street. 2). Look left, right, left and behind you and in front of you for traffic. 3) Wait until no traffic is coming and begin crossing. 4) Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing. 5). Walk, don’t run across the street.
We also have Junior Road Safety Officers who are keen to continue promoting road safety messages to everyone. Please look out for information they might send home
