Scientists, Sir Andre Konstantin Geim and Sir Konstantin Sergeevich Novoselov, both born in Russia, physics professors at the University of Manchester, discovered (in 2003.) an amazing material of the 21st century - called graphene. They were awarded, in 2010, the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work. In simple terms, graphene, is a thin layer of pure carbon; it is a single, tightly packed layer of carbon atoms that are bonded together in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice. In more complex terms, it is an allotrope of carbon in the structure of a plane of sp2 bonded atoms with a molecule bond . * Lingva Technical English Projects Graphene 2 2

4 Types:  Carbon has two major isotopes, C-12 and C-14, which have 6 and 8 neutrons respectively Diamonds   (The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC)      Graphite (before 1565.)      Buckminsterfullerene or "bucky balls" ,(in 1985.) are super strong and tiny carbon spheres 4

It's a supermaterial that is quietly changing the course of technology. Here's why you should get exited about it: * It Will Turn Computers Into Transformers graphene can be changed into different configurations on the fly by simply manipulating it with lasers * Your Smartphone Will Get Even Smarter Different sheets could handle different functions at the same time in the space of a tiny sheet of paper * Your Batteries will Charge in Seconds it charged in seconds * Your Internet Connection Will Be One Million Times Faster an antenna that can transfer an entire terabit of data in one second Lingva Technical English Projects Graphene 6 6

7 7 * You'll Know Your Blood Composition in Real Time
for uses in medicine as it could act as a great bioelectric sensor to monitor things like glucose levels, cholesterol, and DNA sequencing * Your Water Will Taste Awesome it could also be used as an ultrafiltration medium to filter water supplies or even desalinate water * Your Shirt Will Charge your Laptop Just, you know, plug your laptop into your shirt and you're good to go. 7

Some possible applications of graphene: * Mega-fast uploads a whole terabit, in just one second * Plug your phone five seconds for all charged up * Graphene could potentially clump together radioactive waste. graphene could potentially clump together radioactive waste * Improve tennis game HEAD and Novak introduced the new HEAD Graphene ™ Speed racquet * Water everywhere drop drinkable graphene filter covered in tiny holes just big enough to let water through and small enough to keep salt out, making salt water safe for consumption * Touchscreens that use graphene as their conductor super thin, unbreakable touchscreens * Bionic devices in living tissues people with spinal injuries, for example, could re-learn how to use their limbs 8 8

9 Cheaper production of graphene in a couple of years
Lingva Technical English Projects Graphene Researcher Shou-En Zhu Manufacturing method Cheaper production of graphene in a couple of years * The production of high quality graphene at a very low cost. * Fall from the current € 1,200 to just 1 € apiece. * Chemical vapor deposition of methane on a copper plate. * Production of high-quality graphene 10 hours → 60 minutes. 9 9

Graphene in Serbia Institute of Physics Vision of Graphene based mobile phone Serbian-French bilateral project for period Vinca GRAPHENE group * The goal of this project is to produce graphene layers and graphene nanoribbons with high mobility of charge carriers, low resistance, zero grain boundaries and minimum defects in graphene structure. * Researchers at the University of Belgrade in Serbia have built the world’s first graphene-based condenser microphone, A proof of concept: microphone constructed with a graphene membrane has been found to be more sensitive than conventional microphones. 10 10
