FIPPA BC Personal Information: Student name, photo, address, phone number, student number, addresses, scores, etc. FIPPA BC authorizes UBC to collect personal information if it “relates directly to and is necessary for an operating program or activity” of UBC. “30.1 A public body must ensure that personal information in its custody or under its control is stored only in Canada and accessed only in Canada, unless …” Privacy Fact Sheet by UBC Counsel

FIPPA BC Some common problematic practices:
Use any service for student info that has server outside Canada: Dropbox, Google Drive/Docs, Gmail, iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, etc. Lack of security measures through out the information life cycle (collection->transmission->use->disclosure/disposal). Collect unnecessary personal information. Collect personal information indirectly. Collect personal information without proper privacy notification (1. UBC is authorized to collect this information; 2. how the information will be used; 3. contact info to answer questions about the collection). Use the personal information other than what it was originally collected for.
