2 Quick overview SPIRE – Solids handling for intensified process technology Grant Agreement no Start date: 1st September 2015 End date: 31st August 2018 Participants: 22 partners, 8 EU countries SME-led project involving SMEs, industries, universities and research institutes.

3 The Challenge… … The Solution
If processes involving solids are to be transferred to intensified process equipment, it is likely that difficulties associated with the presence of particulate solids will be encountered, such as fouling or blockages. … The Solution To create a holistic platform for facilitating process intensification design and optimisation in processes involving solids handling. To develop and upgrade methods for the handling of solids in continuous production units. To develop or adapt novel sensors and process analytical devices that are suitable for PI in processes involving solids handling. To validate the IbD platform through six case studies in the field of metallurgy, ceramics, mining, pharmaceuticals and chemistry.

Acceleration of the deployment of process intensification within the SPIRE industrial sectors. Faster, more flexible and modular production units. Repatriation of chemical productions to Europe thanks to more efficient and economical plants. Min. 1,500 job creation by 2025. Environmental Reduction of use of resources via increase of overall plants efficiency. Raw materials saving through reduction of fouling. Improvement of visual impact thanks to smaller plants.
