OUTLINE: Introduction of Fiber Reinforced Polymer
Application of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars Properties of Fiber reinforced polymer Types of FRP Case study Conclusion

Introduction Reinforcing Fiber (Glass, Carbon, etc.)
Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite material Fiber Matrix high strength and stiffness Principle load carrying members Carbon, glass, aramid Protects and transfers load between fibers Bonding material Polyester, Epoxy, Vinyl Ester, Urethane Polymer Resin Matrix Reinforcing Fiber (Glass, Carbon, etc.)
4
Application of Fiber Reinforced Polymer
1940’s - Aircraft industry used GFRP After few years, marine sector started using FRP 1970’s - Construction sector
5
Application of Fiber Reinforced Polymer
Internal Application FRP Bars Used in Beams, columns, bridges, slabs etc External application FRP Sheets Strengthening the existing structure
6
FRP Reinforced Polymer Bars
FRP bars – Fiber and matrix Mostly circular in shape Alternative of steel bars Life span is more than steel bar Easy handling Initial cost is high as compared to steel
7
Properties of FRP Its light weight, ¼ the weight of steel
Corrosion Resistance High tensile strength, Stronger than steel. Electrical insulating properties are good. Level of Stiffness is high. Chemical resistance Across a wide range of temperatures, retention of dimensional stability Long term durability Low installation and maintenance cost
8
Types of Fibers Reinforced Polymer Bars
Glass Fibers Low cost High chemical resistance High tensile strength Carbon Fibers High Strength light weight

Smart FRP-OFBG bars and their application in reinforced concrete beams
Case study Smart FRP-OFBG bars and their application in reinforced concrete beams Optical Fiber Brag Grating (OFBG) Sensors Electro – magnetic resistance Small size Durability Fabrication of FRP-OFBG bars OFBG-CFRP bars OFBG-GFRP bars
13
MICROSTRUCTURE TEST OF FRP - OFBG BARS
SEM of bare FBG and GFRP SEM of bare FBG and CFRP scanning electronic mirror Images OFBG is combined with FRP very well. Therefore FBG can sense the strain of FRP bar.
14
Mechanical test of FRP-OFBG bars (Tensile test)
MPa ) MPa ) Comparison of CFRP-OFBG and CFRP bars under load Comparison of GFRP-OFBG and GFRP bars under load Diameter of FRP bar – 6 mm Diameter of OFBG is about 2% that of FRP bar Area of section is about 0.04% that of FRP bar. OFBGs don't affect the mechanical properties of FRP bars.
15
FRP-OFBG REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM TESTS
Test design and preparation Structure specification of FRP concrete beam FRP-concrete beam under loader and the position of FBGs in FRP
16
Test results: failure modes of concrete beams
Failure mode of CFRP-OFBG beams Failure mode of GFRP-OFBG beams
17
Test results: failure modes of concrete beams
FRP-OFBG bar strain Low – Support Moderate – One third span High – Mid span Microstructure of FRP-OFBG bar after beam failure SEM test (Scanning Electronic Mirror) OFBG is combined with FRP very well at uncracked interface. FRP-OFBG bar can monitor the strain of FRP bar until beam failure.
18
Further work on case study
Design Analysis of a simple supported Beam Steel reinforced beam Glass Fiber reinforced polymer Beam Carbon Fiber reinforced Polymer Beam All the designs will be compared with each other.
19
Conclusion demand in Future construction works.
FRP is an Innovative material which will be in high demand in Future construction works. Life span of the structure increases. Maintenance and repair cost is very low Long term Durability of the structure. OFBG don’t affect the mechanical properties of FRP bars because OFBG diameter is relative thin compared with FRP bar diameter. FRP-OFBG bar can serve as both reinforcement and sensor.
