2 Restoring New Testament Christianity
In the 1500’s the Reformation movement swept across Europe in an effort to reform Roman Catholicism. In the 1800’s in America there was an effort to simply restore New Testament Christianity, called the Restoration Movement. There was the plea to speak where the Bible speaks and to be silent where the Bible is silent. Churches of our Lord today have certainly drifted from this principle – no longer is this their plea. Some say in an effort to justify some practice, there are many things we do for which we have no authority.

3 Restoring New Testament Attitudes
“Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me” (Mark 10:21).

4 Restoring New Testament Attitudes
Zeal

5 Zeal 1) Lord’s people are to be zealous.
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you” (Titus 2:11-15).

6 Zeal 1) Lord’s people are to be zealous.

7 Zeal Zealous – “most eagerly desirous of, zealous for” (Thayer, p. 271). “Thus redeemed, they now become his willing servants, and are zealous of good works—affectionately attached to that noble employment which is assigned to them by that Master whom it is an inexpressible honor to serve” (Adam Clarke's Commentary).

8 Zeal 2) N.T. Christians were busy teaching.
“And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ” (Acts 5:42). “Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4).

9 Zeal 3) They were steadfast in serving the Lord.
“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). Steadfast – “to give constant attention to a thing” (Thayer, p. 547). Vine says, “lit., to be strong towards, to endure in, or persevere in, to be continually stedfast with a person or thing” (p. 238). “So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart” (Acts 2:46).

10 Zeal 4) Zeal must be couple with knowledge.
“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:1-3).

11 Restoring New Testament Attitudes
Zeal Joy

12 Joy 1) Paul’s instructions to the Philippians.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4).

13 Joy 1) Paul’s instructions to the Philippians.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). He is the object of my rejoicing – He knows me and I know Him. I’m a part of His family. Yet He is also the basis of my rejoicing – I can rejoice because of the spiritual blessings I have in Him. “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25).

14 Joy 2) Joy in knowing the gospel is preached.
“Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from good will: The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice” (Philippians 1:15-18).

15 Joy 3) There is joy in receiving the gospel.
“Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing” (Acts 8:39). “Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household” (Acts 16:34).

16 Joy 4) Joy in seeing others obey the gospel.
“Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord” (Acts 11:22-23). “holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain” (Philippians 2:16).

17 Joy 5) Can rejoice even in suffering.
“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified” (1 Peter 4:12-14).

18 Restoring New Testament Attitudes
Zeal Joy Boldness

19 Boldness 1) The boldness of the apostles.
“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus…And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:13, 18-20).

20 Boldness 1) The boldness of the apostles.

21 Boldness 2) Paul’s request.
“praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints--and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel” (Ephesians 6:18-19). Boldly – “The word means “fearless, confident freedom in speaking” (Wuest’s Word Studies).

22 Boldness 3) Must be spoken in love as well.
“but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ” (Ephesians 4:15). “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16).

23 Boldness 4) Paul’s charge to Timothy.
“I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:1-2).

24 Restoring New Testament Attitudes
Zeal Joy Boldness

25 Conclusion: 1) Zeal, joy, and boldness proceeding from a living faith in Jesus Christ will prepare us to set out to conquer the world for the Lord. 2) There will be no more lost opportunities because of laziness. 3) There will be no more time wasted complaining. 4) There will be no shrinking from proclaiming the whole counsel of God. 5) We need desperately these type attitudes to be successful in serving our God.
