2 Topic 1 : How to become an Editor and Editor in Chief
Being invited to take on a journal role by a Publisher or another Editor / Editor-in Chief to become an Associate Editor /Assistant Editor – to gain experience and to determine if this is the role for you Applying to an Advert in a journal for appointing a journal Editor or Associate Editor Becoming an Editor in Chief is normally seen as an increase in role responsibilities and also being responsible for a number of other colleagues working as Associate or Assistant Editor roles. Please look at our Scopus Frequently Asked Questions - The Role of an Editor: )

3 The role of an Editor in relation to the journal , the authors ,the reviewers and the readers
Editor responsibilities to the journal ( External ) The Publisher – your role is to manage the journal and its content and not to bring it into disrepute . You need to assure excellent content and check for unethical practice in articles Be pro-active in developing the journal for either national or international publication Responsibilities to authors Good communication throughout submission process Ensure they have the best feedback for revision Excellent resources on offer to help them write and publish their article Responsibilities to reviewers Ensure they have the best resources available to undertake the review such as a reviewer comment document Communicate with the reviewers in a professional manner Responsibilities to the journal readers Ensure that they have the best resources to enable them to engage with the articles Ensure that the articles they read and use as evidence are scholarly and the research is recognized as following ethical guidelines ( See: )

4 Working with the Publisher
The Publisher owns the journal ( Different models of ownership and practice in publishing) As an example : I work for Elsevier and an Editor in Chief and I have a Senior Publisher that works with me and to whom I am responsible for the day to day management of the journal I also have a Journal manager in Chennai who also works with us as a team Some of you may well be working on your own at the beginning of setting up a new journal If you are appointed into the role then this is very different and you have more to learn and build a new team

5 The role of the Editor in ensuring the journal is an ethical publication
Crosscheck / Ithenticate use It is not to be used indiscriminately Every paper must be checked if high % similarities appear This is a fundamental role for the journal editor – as a Scopus Subject Chair for example I am reliant on the Editor’s confidence that their journal ( if submitted ) is an ethical journal in relation to its content ) The Editor’s role is to ensure that every case is considered carefully – if using the CrossCheck / Ithenticate Every aspect of the journal is clear to understand and visible to the potential authors and readers of the journal ( See Scopus FAQ’s : Translated into Russian )

6 Maintaining a quality journal in the academic and practice communities
How do we ensure that the journal is maintained as an important part of the community it serves: 1 . Continued Marketing Conferences related to the journal subject matter E.g.. Our NETNEP international conferences – 6th – bi-annual has been approved every time until now –the phrase NETNEP is a known one and has become if you like a branded conference. See : The journey began in 2006 – so 10 years and this was the 6th conference . 2. Social media Twitter account for important announcements or key papers in the journal –promotes readership. Different countries may use other media such as Facebook to promote the journal 3. Application for Scopus Is dependent on the factors we have discussed that are in fact ‘ behind the journal front pages’ – this is what we explore and evaluate to determine suitability for submission 4. The Editor has a major role to play In ensuring successful submission to Scopus but also in ensuring the quality of the journal content to support best practice in different communities

7 TOP10 tips for being a good editor & team leader (1/2)

8 TOP10 tips for being a good editor & team leader (2/2)
6. Ensure that you communicate with your Editorial Board regularly and enlist their involvement in the journal ( Have a reasonable number helps 7. Ensure that any Advisory Board you may have is involved in the reviewer role as well as supporting the journal in the international community. This is seen as a prestigious role in many countries . 8. Ensure that you have a manageable workload as the main Editor or Editor in Chief Associate Editors can support the Editor through becoming responsible for an aspect of the journal such as a Section lead Listen and learn to what is happening around you in your specialist area and what is impacting on the authors and of course the reviewers in their workplaces and in their social context .It is so important Finally: Please enjoy the role – it is an honor to be an Editor or editor in Chief or an Associate Editor for a journal that promotes excellence in scholarship in a specialist field of practice or discipline and is also known as an ethical journal and fair in its decisions to authors
