1 LEARNING STYLES OF STUDENTS Dr. Md. Mozahar Ali Prof. , Ag
LEARNING STYLES OF STUDENTS Dr. Md. Mozahar Ali Prof., Ag. Extension GTI, BAU, Mymensingh

2 Aims: To inform participants about different learning styles of students so that they may improve their delivery of instructions and assessment of students.

3 Objectives Participants will be able to:
Define learning style Explain primary learning styles Explain learning styles adopting multiple intelligence approach Identify learning styles that avoid classroom involvement, and or result in classroom participation Identify self learning style

4 Definition: A learning style is simply a preference for the method by which you learn, and remember what you learned.

5 Three Primary Learning Style
Auditory Visual Kinesthetic

6 The Three Personal Learning Style:
When you… Visual Auditory Kinesthetic & Tactile Spell Do you try to see the word? Do you sound out the word or use a phonetic approach? Do you write the word down to find if it feels right? Talk Do you sparingly but dislike listening for too long? Do you favor words such as see Picture, and imagine? Do you enjoy listening but are impatient to talk? Do you use words such as hear, tune, and think? Do you gesture and use expressive movements? Do you use words such as feel, touch and hold?

7 The Three Personal Learning Style:
When you… Visual Auditory Kinesthetic & Tactile Concentrate Do you become distracted by untidiness or movement? Do you become distracted by sounds or noises? Do you become distracted by activity around you? Meet someone again Do you forget names but remember faces or remember where you met? Do you forget faces but remember names or remember what you talked about? Do you remember best what you did together? Contact people on business Do you prefer direct, face-to-face, personal meetings? Do you prefer the telephone? Do you talk with them while walking or participating in an activity?

8 The Three Personal Learning Style:
When you… Visual Auditory Kinesthetic & Tactile Read Do you like descriptive scenes or pause to imagine the actions? Do you enjoy dialog and conversation or hear the characters talk? Do you prefer action stories or are not a keen reader? Do something new at work Do you like to see demonstrations, diagrams, slides or posters? Do you prefer verbal instructions or talking about it with someone else? Do you prefer to jump right in and try it?

9 The Three Personal Learning Style:
When you… Visual Auditory Kinesthetic & Tactile Put something together Do you look at the directions and the picture? Do you ignore the directions and figure it out as you go along? Need help with a computer application Do you seek out pictures or diagrams? Do you call the help desk, ask a neighbor or growl at the computer? Do you keep trying to do it or try it on another computer?

10 Learning style and testing style mis-match
Visual learners easily make images from the words they hear and read Take notes well and their mental images rapidly trigger the words they need to recall during a written test Visual style tend to have higher grades and test scores that reflect the match between their learning and testing style

11 Learning style and testing style mis-match
Auditory and kinesthetic learners learn, store and retrieve information in a different way They are required to output what they have learned on written tests differently These written tests may take the form of multiple choice, short answer, essay, or standardized

12 LEARNING STYLES: A MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
APPROACH 1. Body / Kinesthetic Intelligence This intelligence is related to physical movement and the knowing/wisdom of the body. Capacities involved: control of ‘voluntary’ movements control of ‘reprogrammed’ movements expanding awareness through the body, the mind and body connection mimetic abilities improved body functioning

13 LEARNING STYLES: A MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
APPROACH 2. Interpersonal Intelligence This intelligence operates primarily through person-to-person relationships and communication. Capacities involved: effective verbal/non-verbal communication sensitivity to other’s moods, temperaments, motivations, and feelings working cooperatively in a group ability to discern other’s underlying intentions and behavior “passing over” into the perspective of another creating and maintaining synergy

14 LEARNING STYLES: A MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
APPROACH 3. Intra-personal Intelligence This intelligence relates to inner states of being, self-reflection, meta-cognition (i.e. thinking about thinking), and awareness of spiritual realities. Capacities involved:-- concentration of the mind mindfulness metacognition awareness and expression of different feeling transpersonal sense of the self higher-order thinking and reasoning

15 LEARNING STYLES: A MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
APPROACH 4. Logical/Mathematical Intelligence Often called “scientific thinking” this intelligence deals with inductive and deductive thinking/reasoning, numbers and the recognition of abstract patterns. Capacities involved: abstract pattern recognition inductive reasoning deductive reasoning discerning relationships & connections performing complex calculations scientific reasoning

16 LEARNING STYLES: A MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
APPROACH 5. Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence This intelligence is based on the recognition of tonal patterns, including various environmental sounds and on a sensitivity to rhythm and beats. Capacities involved: appreciation for the structure of music schemes or frames in the mind for hearing music sensitivity to sounds recognition, creation and reproduction of melody/rhythm sensing characteristic qualities of tone

17 LEARNING STYLES: A MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
APPROACH 6. Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence This intelligence, which is related to words and language both written and spoken, dominates most Western educational systems. Capacities involved: understanding order & meaning of words convincing someone of a course of action explaining, teaching and learning humor memory & recall “meta-linguistic” analysis

18 LEARNING STYLES: A MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
APPROACH 7. Visual / Spatial Intelligence This intelligence, which relies on the sense of sight and being able to visualize an object, includes the ability to create internal mental images/pictures. Capacities involved: active imagination forming mental images finding your way in space image manipulations graphic representation recognizing relationships of objects in space accurate perception from different angles

19 Learning styles that avoid classroom involvement
A. Avoidant B. Competitive C. Dependent

20 Learning styles that are more likely to result in classroom participation
A. Collaborative B. Participant C. Independent

21 What kind of learner are you?
Activists Reflectors Theorists Pragmatists ?

22 What kind of learner are you?
1. Activists: Activists like to be involved in new experiences. Activists learn best when: involved in new experiences, problems and opportunity working with others in business games, team tasks, being thrown in the deep end with a difficult task chairing meetings, leading discussions

23 What kind of learner are you?
2. Reflectors Reflectors like to stand back and look at a situation from diperspectives. Reflectors learn best when: Observing individuals or groups at work They have the opportunity to review what has happens thing about what they have learned Producing analyses and reports doing tasks without deadlines

24 What kind of learner are you?
3. Theorists: Theorists adapt and integrate observations into complex and logically sound theories. Theorists learn best when: - they are put in complex situations where they have to learn their skills and knowledge - they are in structured situations with clear purpose - they are offered interesting ideas or concepts even that they are not immediately relevant - they have the chance to question and probe ideas behind things

25 What kind of learner are you?
4. Pragmatists: Pragmatists are keen to try things out Pragmatists learn best when: there is an obvious link between the topic and job they have the chance to try out techniques with feedback, role-playing they are shown techniques with obvious advantages they are shown a model they can copy e.g. a film or a respected boss

26 What we have discussed:
Defined learning style Explained primary learning styles Explained learning styles adopting multiple intelligence approach Identified learning styles that avoid classroom involvement, and or result in classroom participation Identified self learning style

27 It is ??? Question time now
