2 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3: 1-21

3 “There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews
“There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again” (John 3:1-7).

4 “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:8-14).

5 “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life
“that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God” (John 3:15-21).

6 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3:1-21 God’s Gift To The World

7 God’s Gift To The World 1) His Son!
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

8 God’s Gift To The World 2) Prompted by love!
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:8-9). “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:12-13).

9 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3:1-21 God’s Gift To The World
Mission Of Christ

10 Mission Of Christ 1) To save the world.
“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17).

11 Mission Of Christ 2) God’s desire for all men.
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4).

12 Mission Of Christ 3) He sought to save mankind.
“And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:9-10). “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!” (Luke 7:34).

13 Mission Of Christ 4) He came to heal the sick.
“Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance” (Matthew 9:10-13).

14 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3:1-21 God’s Gift To The World
Mission Of Christ Work Of The Spirit

15 Work Of The Spirit 1) It is through the Spirit one is born again.
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit” (John 3:6-8).

16 Work Of The Spirit 2) There is much controversy about v. 8.
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit” (John 3:8). “These verses record Jesus’ help of Nicodemus to believe and understand the invisible power of the new birth. To be sure, a baptismal ceremony can be seen; but the forgiveness, clean conscience, and receiving the Spirit cannot be seen. Like the powerful wind, though invisible, its power is nevertheless profound” (James Burton Coffman Commentary on John, p. 92).

17 Work Of The Spirit 2) There is much controversy about v. 8.
“As one does not know where the invisible wind comes from or goes to, so he does not detect the invisible operations of God’s Spirit in the process of conviction and conversion of the lost. This occurs through the word of God as it is active in the heart and life (Jas. 1:18; Heb. 4:12; 1 Pet. 1:22-25), but includes also those mysterious circumstances of providence which bring together the ready heart and zealous preacher or teacher of the word (cf. Acts 16:14-15)” (Dan King’s Commentary of John, p. 59).

18 Work Of The Spirit 3) Notice how the Spirit works in this new birth.
“Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever” (1 Peter 1:22-23). “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

19 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3:1-21 God’s Gift To The World
Mission Of Christ Work Of The Spirit Need Of Man

20 Need Of Man 1) He had to be born again.
“Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:3-5).

21 Need Of Man 2) The need of the new birth was because of sin.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

22 Need Of Man 3) God’s mindfulness of our needs.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love…In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:3-4,7).

23 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3:1-21 God’s Gift To The World
Mission Of Christ Work Of The Spirit Need Of Man Way Of Life

24 Way Of Life 1) Faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:14-15).

25 Way Of Life 2) Christ’s sheep hear & follow Him.
“Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one” (John 10:25-30).

26 Way Of Life 3) Listen to the words of Paul.
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

27 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3:1-21 God’s Gift To The World
Mission Of Christ Work Of The Spirit Need Of Man Way Of Life Evidence Of Faith

28 Evidence Of Faith 1) It is one who obeys the truth.
“But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God” (John 3:21).

29 Evidence Of Faith 2) Notice what the truth does for man.
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17). “Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:18).

30 Evidence Of Faith 3) How does it do this?
“Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness” (Romans 6:16-18).

31 SEVEN GREAT FACTS ABOUT JOHN 3:1-21 God’s Gift To The World
Mission Of Christ Work Of The Spirit Need Of Man Way Of Life Evidence Of Faith Consequence Of Unbelief

32 Consequence Of Unbelief
1) Condemnation. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed” (John 3:18-20).

33 Consequence Of Unbelief
2) Consider the goodness and the severity of God! “Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off” (Romans 11:22).

34 Consequence Of Unbelief
3) Obey – blessing; obey not – wrath. “who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God” (Romans 2:6-11).
