8 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard
Propeller Safety What condition is your propeller in? Should you be using it?

9 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard
All propellers are inherently dangerous. Model airplane propellers are especially dangerous. Model airplane engines designed and modified to achieve maximum operating capabilities create unpredictable and potentially sever loads, leading to various forms of potential propeller failure. Ignoring reasonable safeguards may likely be catastrophic. This concern is the motivation for the following discussion.

10 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard
The warnings about the propellers use must be taken seriously. The principal load component acting on a propeller are: Centrifugal (from circular motion) Thrust / Drag (from lift/drag acting on blade sections) Torsional Acceleration (from engine combustion) Vibration (from resonant frequency) NO DAMAGE OR DEFECT IS ACCEPTABLE DO NOT USE Damaged Propellers for any reason!

11 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard

12 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard
Don’t get Cut! Consider using a “Chicken Stick“ or an Electric Starter when starting your motor.

13 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard
Don’t get Cut! Painted Tips help with visibility!

14 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard
Repair Props? There is an ongoing discussion on the forums about how to fix this. The best and only way to fix this is with money! Buy a new prop. Putting your safety and those around you in jeopardy is not worth saving a few dollars.

15 TRCC SAFETY TOPIC Rob Hoard
Conclusion: Assume any propeller can fail at any time. Never stand in front of running motors other than an idle. Never stand in-line with the propeller disk. Watch for other people near your airplane during engine run up. ALWAYS verify you are on the correct model program in your radio BEFORE starting your motor/engine. Always approach your running engine from behind the motor for any adjustments or plug ignitor removal.
