Muscular system
3
Functions Movement
4
Types of muscle tissue Skeletal muscle Smooth muscle Cardiac muscle
5
Skeletal muscles Most consciously controlled by nervous system
Attached to bones Cells are large, have many nuclei, vary in length from 1 mm to 30 cm, striated
6
Smooth muscles Usually not under conscious control
Spindle-shaped, 1 nucleus, not striated Walls of hollow structures like digestive tract, blood vessels, intestines
7
Cardiac muscles Found only in heart
Striated like skeletal, but cells are smaller May have 1-2 nuclei Similar to smooth b/c nervous system does not voluntarily control
8
Muscle contraction
9
Tendons Tough connective tissue
Attached to bone to make them work as levers Joint acts as fulcrum
10
Work it, baby, work it Biceps contracts, elbow bends/flexes
Triceps must contract to extend Aerobic – better efficiency, endurance Resistance – muscle size, strength, lower body fat, stronger bones
