1 The Muscular System POWER Yeah…just like that!

2 • What is the name of the largest muscle is the body and where is it?
Questions • What is the name of the largest muscle is the body and where is it?

3 Questions (Gluteus maximus, the buttocks)

4 • Where is the hardest working muscle in the body?
Questions • Where is the hardest working muscle in the body?

5 Questions Your Heart is the hardest working muscle in your body!
Fun fact!: James Brown (The Godfather of Soul) was known as the “Hardest Working Man in Show Business”

6 • What percent of your body weight is muscle?

7 Questions 40%! What makes up the most weight in your body? Bones? Fat? Skin? Fingernails? Something else? Of course, it’s muscle!! Muscles make up the most weight in your body!

8 • Have you ever eaten muscle tissue?

9 YES! Most meat we eat is muscle tissue, such as hamburger, steak, pork chops, chicken, fish fillets, lobster tail and shrimp, beef heart, etc).

10 The same goes for a cow. All those cuts of beef that we like are just the cow’s muscles tissues surrounded by fat. Mmmmmmmm…..yummy muscle tissues.

11 Muscular System You have muscles for moving body parts, but many more muscles work internally to keep you going. The muscular system consists of all the muscles in your internal organs, as well as those attached to bones.

12 Muscular System How do muscles work/function?
1. moves body parts by contracting (getting shorter) 2. controls life functions (breathing, heartbeat, digestion, etc.)

13 Muscular System Can you rub your tummy while you pat your head? Try it. Whether or not you succeeded, you at least were able to move around and give it a shot because you wanted to. Now, QUICK! STOP YOUR HEART FROM BEATING! If you can’t, make your stomach quit squishing up your most recent meal! Some muscles are controllable by your thinking, other’s aren’t!

14 Muscular System A voluntary muscle can be controlled by thinking. For example, the biceps of your upper arm. Involuntary muscles automatically contract on their own, such as your stomach.

15 Muscular System These are called: SKELETAL or STRIATED MUSCLES
Muscles aren’t all built the same way, because they have different jobs to perform. The STRONGEST muscles you have are the ones that you’d use to shove a refrigerator around or swing a bat with. They’re strong, but tire pretty quickly. These are called: SKELETAL or STRIATED MUSCLES a.) voluntary (you have to think about it) b). they are attached to bones & structures needing movement

16 Muscular System Skeletal muscles that move your body around come in two varieties: flexors and extensors. i. flexor – bends a joint (biceps) ii. extensor – straightens a joint (triceps)

17 Muscles work in Pairs & PULL
Skeletal muscles work in pairs. One muscle will contract and one will extend. Muscles always pull; they never push. Each muscle needs another muscle to pull it back into its original position.

18 Tendons Muscles can pull because they are attached to bones by tough bands of connective tissue called tendons. Tendons: attach muscle to bone and allow bones and muscles to work together to provide movement.

19 Muscular System Another type of muscle, called smooth muscle, and they are good at changing the shape and thickness of organs like your intestines, your bladder, and your blood vessels. 2. SMOOTH MUSCLES involuntary (working automatically) b. found in internal organs (intestines, blood vessels)

20 Muscular System 3. CARDIAC MUSCLE a. involuntary, thankfully
Not EVERY one of your internal organs uses smooth muscle to run, though. We’ve already talked about your heart and its never-resting job. The heart is made of cardiac muscle, which never has to rest to keep going for as long as you live. 3. CARDIAC MUSCLE a. involuntary, thankfully b. found only in the heart

21 Muscular Dystrophy There are many reasons why someone would be confined to a wheelchair. Brain or nerve damage (paralysis) could be one, but another genetic birth defect that affects thousands around the country is muscular dystrophy.

22 Muscular Dystrophy Muscular dystrophy is a disease where a person’s muscles weaken after birth and the sick have little control over them. Over time, people with M.D. will often end up in wheelchairs as their muscles fail them. Their minds are completely healthy, though. No cure currently exists for this disease. The MDA (Jerry’s Kids) is the most prominent charity searching for a cure.

23 Steroids The drive to be bigger, “better” looking, or an improved athlete has caused people to pursue any means possible to achieve these goals. …and finds that instantaneous results aren’t exactly happening. Steroid abuse can lead to dozens of side effects due to way too many hormones. The effects can be embarrassing to deadly. Here are just a few: Problems: acne, heart & liver problems, depression & mood swings, stunted growth, cancer, death, unwanted body hair or baldness, cancer, death… or at the least..you could end up looking like this. AhhHH!  STAY OFF THE STEROIDS!

24 What are the 2 functions of the muscular system?
Review What are the 2 functions of the muscular system?

25 Review 1. moves body parts by contracting (getting shorter)
You would collapse to the ground and never be able to eat, drink, or fight off any attacker. You’d die of thirst, starvation, or being eaten by fire ants. 2. controls life functions (breathing, heartbeat, digestion, etc.) You would instantly empty his bladder, you’d, uh, poop your pants, stop digesting his food, stop moving air in & out of your body, and your blood would come to a standstill. Life span: about 5 minutes, max.

26 Review What are the 3 types of muscles?

27 Review • Skeletal muscles –voluntary (we control them), are striped or striated, and move bones • Cardiac muscle –involuntary ( we cannot control them), are striated and found only in the heart • Smooth muscle –involuntary, found in digestive organs and blood vessel walls, contract rhythmically without getting tired.

28 Review Do Muscles PULL or PUSH?

29 Muscles work in Pairs & PULL
Skeletal muscles work in pairs. One muscle will contract and one will extend. Muscles always pull; they never push. Each muscle needs another muscle to pull it back into its original position.
