This activity is intended to teach our students the process for electing the next President of the United States AND as a way for our students to become informed voters, whether they are voting in the Eastlake Mock Election AND/OR are eligible to vote with El Paso County.

3. Electoral Vote vs. Popular Vote
Electoral vote is taken at the Electoral College (not a real place)
Electors come from each state to vote for one person for President and one person for Vice President
They did not always run together…sometimes these two could completely dislike each other
Popular votes come from YOU, the voter!
Four presidents in history have won the popular vote but not the Electoral vote
They are not dependent on each other

4. Electoral Vote vs. Popular Vote
Complicated Answer…
Article II, Section I of the United States Constitution
Simple Answer…
Each state is entitled to a certain number of electors (equal to their number of Senators and Representatives) and they vote
Nothing complicated about it!
You vote, your vote counts towards the popular vote
Usually the popular vote in each state ties to the electoral votes awarded by that state

5. Electoral Votes Total number of electoral votes = 538
100 Senators Representatives + 3 D.C. votes = 538
Magic Number to win the Presidency = 270
Theoretically, there can be a tie in electoral votes (269)
But let’s hope that doesn’t happen…

Gore won the Popular Vote, but after a Supreme Court decision, Bush won the Electoral votes

ALL students are eligible to vote in the Eastlake Mock Election
Students MUST be wearing their ID to vote
“Early” Voting – Thursday, November 3rd
Before school, at lunch, after school
Regular Voting – Monday, November 7th
Election Results announced Tuesday, November 8th during 4th period
