Before the SAT: Know what to expect. Types of questions and number of questions Understand the directions. Take the time to carefully read through and understand the directions before the test. This way, you don’t have to waste time reading them during the test.

Start your mental preparation the day before the test.
Get a good night’s sleep. Have everything that you need for the test ready the night before. Set your alarm clock and get there on time. If you are late, you can’t take the test.

Section 3 and 4 of the SAT are the two Mathematics sections.

Instructions: Section 3 Math Test – No Calculator
25 MINUTES, 20 QUESTIONS Turn to section 3 of your answer sheet to answer the questions in this section. For questions 1-15, solve each problem, choose the best answer from the choices provided, and fill in the corresponding circle on your answer sheet. For questions 16-20, solve the problem and enter your answer in the grid on the answer sheet. Please refer to the directions before question 16 on how to enter your answers in the grid. You may use any available space in your test booklet for scratch work.

All figures lie in a plane unless otherwise indicated. Unless otherwise indicated, the domain of a given function f is the set of all real numbers x for which f(x) is a real number.

Grid-In Questions Although not required, it is suggested that you write your answer in the boxes at the top of the columns to help you fill in the circles accurately. You will receive credit only if the circles are filled in correctly. Mark no more than one circle in any column. No question has a negative answer. Some problems may have more than one correct answer. In such cases, grid only one answer.

Instructions: Section 4 Math Test – Calculator
55 MINUTES, 38 QUESTIONS Turn to section 4 of your answer sheet to answer the questions in this section. Instructions for section 4 will be the same as section 3 with the following exceptions: Questions 1-30 are Multiple-Choice Questions are Grid-ins Under notes, note 1 will read: 1. The use of a calculator is permitted.

Timing. The SAT math sections consist of 15 multiple-choice problems and 5 grid-in problems in 25 minutes, and 30 multiple-choice problems and 8 Grid-in problems in 55 minutes. You have a total of 80 minutes to complete 58 problems; an average of about 1 minute 20 seconds per problem.

Scoring: Multiple-choice questions: Correct answers = 1 point each
Incorrect answer = 0 point each Blank answer = 0 points (DO NOT leave answers blank!) Student-produced response questions (grid-in):

A statistical process will be used to scale your score from 200 (lowest) to 800 (highest). Average scores are about 500. Only one of two scores will pertain to math, so your total combined score will be between 400 (lowest) and 1600 (highest). Average combined score is about 1000. Along with your scaled score, you will receive an SAT percentile score. This score compares your performance to other students who took the test.

Playing Group General Play
Each team will start the game with 50 points. A team is randomly chosen to go first, and begins the game by selecting a category and point value (e.g. “Algebra and Functions for 20 points"). The host then reads the clue, after which any player on any team can buzz in.

Jeopardy Rules 1. A question will be projected onto an overhead screen and also read by teacher. If no team responds to the question after 3 minutes, the question will be tossed out and not replaced by another question. 2. As soon as a team completes a problem, a designated team captain will write the answer on the small notepad provided, buzz in, and immediately hand the answer to the teacher. It must be noted that no team may continue to work on the problem once they have buzzed in. 3. Before any answers are revealed, all other teams will have an additional 60 seconds to complete the problem and give the answer to the teacher at or before the end of the 60 seconds. Correct answers will earn half the point value for that particular question. (The team that buzzed in will receive the full point value for the correct answer.)

Jeopardy Rules 4. Only the team that buzzed in first will be eligible to receive the full value of the question if the answer given is correct. However, if the team that buzzed in first is wrong, they will be penalized the full value of the question. (Only the team that buzzed in first is in jeopardy of losing points, the other teams will not lose points for incorrect answers.) 5. The answer will be displayed before the next question is chosen. The team that buzzes in first and gets the question correct will choose the next question. (If the team that buzzes in answers the question incorrectly, the team that chose that question will stay in control of the board and select the next question.)

Final Jeopardy Rules 6. Any team with zero or negative points will be disqualified from final jeopardy. (in subsequent rounds, teams with zero or negative scores will start with ½ the score of the team with the least amount of positive points) 7. Each team will be given an index card for final jeopardy. One side of the index card will have a grid-in answer box and the other side will have a space for students to write the amount of points they wish to wager on the question. The teacher will reveal the topic for the final jeopardy question and each team will have 20 seconds to write the amount of points they want to wager on the question. (Teams can wager anywhere from zero to half of their total number of points.)

Final Jeopardy Rules 8. After a wager is made, the team should turn the card over to the other side. (Your wager should be kept secret from other groups.) 9. Once all wagers are made, the teacher will reveal the final Jeopardy question. Teams will have 2 minutes to answer the question using the grid-in box. At the end of 2 minutes, the teacher will collect each card and check each answer and wager. 10. If the answer is correct, the team gets the wager added to their score. If it is incorrect, the wager is subtracted from their score.
