Why was there discontent among workers and peasants?

Hard Times in Russia Russians were unhappy about high taxes, poor working conditions, and the lack of political freedom. People went without food and fuel that was being used for the Russian army as they fought against Germany.

Czar Nicholas II attempted to appease Russians by forming a Parliament.
He ended up dissolving it.

The People Protested Czar Nicholas ordered the army to restore order, but the army joined the people.

Lenin made promises to the people. “Peace, Land, Bread!” “Power to the Soviets!”

Lenin Took Power Lenin’s political party, the Bolsheviks, took control of Russia. Lenin believed his ideas were right. He believed his ideas were more important than democracy. The Bolsheviks suppressed political rivals. They executed the czar and his family.

The U.S.S.R. Lenin signed a peace treaty with Germany to end the war.
A civil war within Russia followed. Lenin’s red army won. Russia became the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
