1
Aim: How do living things accomplish anaerobic respiration?
2
What do all living things do to acquire energy?
To get
3
What is Anaerobic Respiration?
ENERGY Organisms make ATP (energy) without oxygen This process is also called fermentation There two types of anaerobic respiration:
4
TWO TYPES OF ANEROBIC RESPIRATION
Alcohol Fermentation Lactic Acid Fermentation All Cellular Respiration begins with glycolysis. Changing glucose into 2 pyruvic acid. This makes 4 ATP but cost 2ATP to happen. This happens in the cytoplasm of the cell.
5
How are these things made?
Lactic Acid Fermentation Alcohol Fermentation Bacteria Yeast
6
Alcohol Fermentation = Glycolysis
Glucose 2 Pyruvic Acid 2 CO2 + 2 Ethyl Alcohol 2 ATP What is the name of the process that converts glucose into pyruvic acid? Glycolysis What is the net gain in ATP for this process? 2 ATP
7
Let’s make some wine!
8
Besides alcohol what else is a waste product of alcoholic fermentation?
Yeast is a unicellular organism capable of carrying out alcoholic fermentation
9
Bakers Yeast The CO2 that is released during fermentation creates bubbles and pockets that make bread rise.
10
Can we do anaerobic cell respiration?
Yes, when our muscles run out of oxygen they do lactic acid fermentation
11
Lactic Acid Fermentation
Glucose 2 Pyruvic Acid 2 Lactic Acid 2 ATP What is the name of the process that converts glucose into pyruvic acid? Glycolysis What is the net gain in ATP for this process? 2 ATP
12
Let’s work out & feel the burn
13
Glucose has 90 x the energy of ATP
1 Glucose = 2 ATP The rest is lost as heat & remains in alcohol or lactic acid
14
Types of Anaerobic cell respiration
Alcohol fermentation Glucose 2 ATP + 2CO2 + Alcohol Lactic acid fermentation Glucose 2 ATP + Lactic acid
15
Why do bread and Swiss cheese have so many holes?
16
Alcohol fermentation vs Lactic A. Fermentation
What is the organic compound used by both? Glucose What is their main product? 2 ATP How are they different? Alcohol fermentation produces alcohol and lactic acid fermentation produces lactic acid
17
Alcohol fermentation vs Lactic Acid Fermentation
What organisms utilize alcohol fermentation? Yeast and Bacteria What organisms utilize lactic acid fermentation? Bacteria & Animal muscle cells when they run out of oxygen
