14. Southampton’s origins
Roman times around 70AD Romans built a settlement near a meander in the River Itchen. This is where Bitterne stands today
In Saxon times the settlement expanded to the western side of the river where St Mary’s Stadium and industrial areas are today
During 11-12th Centuries it was attacked by French soldiers and after this the King demanded fortifications be built. Some of the original Southampton Walls remain standing today
In 13th -15th Centuries it flourished as a port town with wine from France and being the only port where lead and tin was allowed to be exported.

15. During WW2 it was heavily bombed - 11,000 buildings were destroyed
