1. LA UNIÓN

2. Birth of La Unión La Unión was founded the first of January in 1860.
At first, there were four villages: Herrerías, Roche, Portman and El Garbanzal.
Herrerías and El Garbanzal were fighting for being the most important city.
In 1859, they decided to become just one city: La Unión.

3. A mining city
2300 years ago, Qart-Hadast (the old Cartagena) was the first city that fostered the discovery of minerals in La Unión.
Later, Romans invaded Qart-Hadast, and they enslaved people to dig in the mines.
La Unión was a very important mining city since 1840, when people discovered new mines.
La Unión is located in La Sierra Minera, which is 28 km long from Cartagena to Cabo de Palos.

4. The most important kinds of minerals in La Sierra Minera were: Galena, Pyrite and Blenda.
There are over 2400 sorts of minerals in the world, and in La Sierra Minera there are more than 200 types.
When La Unión was an important mining city, there were 1151 mines opened. But, nowadays you can only visit one of them: Mina Agrupa Vicenta.

5. Monuments of La Unión.
PARROQUIA NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL ROSARIO.- It’s the most important church of La unión.
MERCADO PÚBLICO.- It used to be a food market, but nowadays it is a very important building used for different cultural purposes in the city. Being the Mining song contest Festival the most important one. It was built by Pedro Cerdán and Víctor Beltrí, and Eiffel helped them.
LA CASA DEL PIÑÓN.- It was built in Nowadays, it’s the city townhall of La Unión.

6. Festivals in La Unión
Every year at the beginning of October, we have got over ten days of celebrations in La Unión. We remember the patron saint of La Unión: The Holy Virgin of Rosario.
The holy week. It’s a national celebration when we remember the resurrection of Jesuschrist. There are two typical processions where fraternities´members wear pointed,colourful hoods. These processions are on Holy Thursday and Friday.

7. El Cante de Las Minas.
An important international event in La Unión is “El Cante de Las Minas” (a kind of flamenco singing inspired by mining)
It’s a flamenco festival held at the beginning of August.
It’s a celebration to remember our miners.
A lot of famous flamenco singers, guitarists and dancers come here, and they play in Public Market building.
