2 The challenge: The most water scarce region of the world…
Area of physical and economic water scarcity Source: FAO 2013

3 …coupled with a devastating humanitarian crisis due to the Syrian conflict.
4/25/2018 According to the UN, approximately 4.8 Million people have left Syria as of August ’16. The crisis is continuing, both Jordan and Iraq, are still receiving refugees and displaced persons. Kurdistan, Iraq continuously receiving displaced Iraqis & Syrian refugees Lack of qualified WASH staff in humanitarian response organizations (i.e. young college graduates) High turn over of staff (3-6 month for internationals) Destroyed or non-existent infrastructure (i.e. zero WWT in the capital of Erbil) Lack of knowledge and know-how of local staff in SSWM Jordan- majority of refugees in the host communities Host communities nearly doubling in populations Don’t have the capacity to manage water and waste, so dealing with it in a very unsustainable way Very bureaucratic, lots of gov’t oversight and very low innovation Low overall effort to improve sustainability in SSWM Darashakaran Refugee Camp, Erbil, Iraq. © Lillian Volat, cewas
